BTC breaking $25k.

Glad I got in a few hundred at least.

Some just below $12k and a little more here recently at $23k.

Any thoughts on LTC?

You don't need to predict (and truly, you cannot, no one has a crystal ball that tells the future).  You need to develop a disciplined approach to trading.  If you have big profits, it's worth it to scale out of a part of your position.  I just sold a tranche of BTC @ $28,500 and ETH @ $735.  This asset has had a MONSTER move, in a very short period of time.  Now I am not saying that the move is over.  I believe that, over time, we will see significantly higher prices on these assets.  But there is always an ebb and a flow, and when you are up huge, it is important to take something off the table, so that 1) you have free capital available to redeploy and 2) you don't get psychologically injured by an inevitable selloff that in turn causes you to lose your grip on your strategy/discipline.

Keep in mind, the % differences between $29.3K (where we are now) and $30K is a paltry 2.38%.  Don't get married to solid figures.  Recognize that so many traders do make that mistake, and front run them, if you are planning to sell anyway.  Trading isn't for bragging rights, or hitting any specific number, it's for making money, plain and simple.

That being said, the trend is your friend... and BTC continues to set higher daily highs and higher daily lows.  The lack of liquidity for this asset class when it's getting a main stage spotlight is a powerful force.  Don't underestimate it.  If you are keeping your assets on exchange and want to liquidate a portion, set a sell stop at the prior day's low, then raise it each day we print a higher low.

Oh, and that Polkadot (DOT) I allocated 5% of the portfolio to just two days ago @ ~$7?  I doubled down at $8 and sold half on today's +30% move @ $9.40.  I didn't expect to actively trade this position.  But not taking some profits on a 30% daily move is just plain negligent in my book.  I've learned this the hard way too... when the going is good, you feel like a genius and only dream about how much more money you'll be minting in no time flat.  That's typically when the market comes around with a not-so-nice reality check.  Anywho, DOT has good volume and a very strong uptrend.  If you look at the weekly chart, this thing could have a HUGE move higher.  Still wouldn't put more than 10-15% of an aggregate portfolio in an immature coin such as this, but I do recall a post last week asking about what alt's might do well next year.  DOT is leading the pack in my view.  UNI has proven capable as well, however the volume is lacking.

Best of luck folks, here's hoping 2021 offers us some brighter days.  Here in Los Angeles, we have the National Guard posting around some major hospitals, tents going up, patients being treated in the hospital gift shop and others dying in hallways, with morgues/crypts at full capacity.  Given Christmas and New Years, I can only suspect it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Thankful to be self employed and hunkered down at home with the fam.  Be safe everyone.

qman is not posting about altcoins, he posted a basket of stocks comprised of publicly traded blockchain mining companies.  You can invest in these instruments through an online broker such as TDAmeritrade.

Bought more DOT this morning @ $9.80.  Very strong momentum with good volume for an altcoin.  Partial standing sell order @ $10.80.

Remarkable that ETH is holding its huge move from this morning, hanging out just under $1,000.  At this point, I have sold 50% of the ETH in my trading account between $721 - $965.  I have another sell order in place @ $1225 for a third of the remaining position.  Would ideally look to reload between $500-$700, although with this level of positive momentum, I might not get that chance.

It's going to be real interesting to see what happens when the financial markets open tomorrow and the big boys start sloshing their capital around.

You're asking questions for which nobody can give you an honestly straight, reliable answer.  Investment involves risk.  Managing your risk is the name of the game, whether it's with crypto, stocks, your home, your partner, your friends... you get the idea.

Don't look towards others to make your decisions for you.  Find your own confidence and then grow a pair :tongue2:

Trading account allocations:
  • 36% BTC
  • 29% ETH
  • 18% ca$h
  • 13% DOT
  • 4% XTZ

The momentum is absolutely off the charts, and the trend is by no means anything close to broken.  In that regard, a trailing stop would make more sense than an outright sale.  But I have learned (the hard way) that when an asset moves this bigly, this fast, failing to take something off the table almost invariably leads to regret.

On that note. I have a ladder of buy orders already in place between $24500-$31000.

Hey, if your strategy is working for you, by all means please disregard this advice.  However judging from your posts, I would suggest that you are running the risk of hyperactive trading.  It's not uncommon for this to happen to active traders, but be mindful that you can wear yourself out pretty quickly trying to catch every zig and dodge every zag.  Keep an eye on your bottom line, and if you're not getting paid off for the intense amount of attention you're putting in, consider modifying your approach.  Sometimes, less is more.

Cryptocurrency is, de facto, a new and growing asset class.  Institutional money is beginning to enter crypto assets, which is why we have seen the the run we have seen.  But as generally sophisticated and well capitalized investors, they will wait for multiple price cycles to do their buying as profitably as they can.  As qman pointed out, with bitcoin's market cap at ~$500 billion, and the aggregate crypto asset class just touching ~$1 trillion recently (a portion of which simply cannot be realized due to lost keys), there is still a lot of potential here.

Take for example pension funds, which are a large component of what is often referred to "institutional money".  The OECD reported in June 2020 that global pension fund assets rose to $32 trillion in 2019.  Then comes mutual funds, which in the US alone held north of $17 trillion in 2018.  Not to mention insurance companies, investment banks, commercial trusts, endowment funds ($1.7 trillion in 2018), hedge funds ($3.2 trillion as of 2018), and some private equity investors.

I would be hard pressed to give you a specific number for what comprises the total global basket of institutional money, suffice it to say, it is a lot... well over $50 trillion.  So with bitcoin valued at some $500 billion, one can surely see, from a broader bird's eye view of the space, the immense potential of this asset class to continue to run.

Just took another 25% of my DOT off the table @ $14.66.  Really impressive moves here, still have meaningful exposure, but these gains are just too quick not to take a little bit back.

That'll depend on what blockchain you're talking about.  Surely, some of the DeFi protocols have suffered on account of savvy codesmiths who have either been able to find loopholes in the contracts or have otherwise implemented coordinated manipulation of levered markets to benefit handsomely.  But in so far as breaking the encryption that underpins the technology?  It's not something I worry about.  Keep in mind that the best projects have an active development team, and that team will also look towards the utilization of something like quantum computing, if and when that type of processing becomes intelligible enough to apply to the space.

Nice article summarizing a bit of ETH1/ETH2: https://blog.ethereum.org/2021/01/20/the-state-of-eth2-january-2021/

Prices appear to be low to day because of some "FUD" with regards to a non-existent double spend in BTC: https://www.cryptoglobe.com/latest/2021/01/bitcoin-did-not-experience-a-double-spend-the-blockchain-worked-as-intended/

Buyers are stepping in here, but there is some pain overhead... I don't think you need to be in a hurry to chase here.  Let this shake out for a day or two, regroup, and figure out your strategy.

I'm comfortable with my allocations.  Volatile swings are endemic to the space, and can only be expected after the rocket fueled run we've seen.  Hence the importance of trading in scales.  I certainly would not be selling here, and if you have capital available, I would be comfortable putting some of it to work here in the ~$29K's BTC, and $1000 ETH looks like it'll probably be a floor.

Just don't get hyperactive.  Zoom out on the chart.  I've gotten caught up in trying to trade the minutia (especially when my accounts were smaller), and while it may have had me riding high for a stretch, the nervousness and eventual pain was never worth it outside of it being a learning process.  In hindsight, I consider it the tuition paid, but I can tell you are fresh to the scene (Enkidu I'm talkin' to you brother!), and I've been in that seat.  Just trying to help you avoid a few of the mistakes I had to have hammered into my head the hard way.

Just in case anyone was wondering, some of this move in BTC can be attributed to Elon Musk changing his Twitter bio to #bitcoin and in turn, forcing the liquidation of many millions of short positions.  Regardless of its origins, and for whatever it may be worth, I am not selling into this strength.

This is a doom and gloom report based on the intersection of the 50 day and 200 day moving averages. They're calling it the Death Cross. It's all over my head.

BTC is no where near experiencing a death cross, but to comment on the term... Both the death cross, and its inverse, the golden cross (where the 50 moves above the 200) are lagging indicators.  For my money, they mean next to nothing.  On a fast moving trend, the cross can actually coincide with a decent consolidation/rest period that has now carved out enough of a base before resuming the prevailing trend.  Financial news is 90% garbage, they just need to fill the space.  Price action will tell you 99% of the story.  On that note...

In so far as BTC and the whole lot, we're more or less directionless right now.  I'm stickin' with my statement of the prior weeks; this is consolidation, volatile sideways chop, and you should be comfortable with your long term exposure, and do whatever you can to avoid "death by a thousand papercuts" by trying too hard to trade this period.
