Is it possible to get around the fees and stay under the radar by using a hardware wallet? Seems like a clever way of moving coin between sites.

Just started using Coinbase and want to move a couple to Binance. Instead of going through GDAX, can I just save the coin to a hardware wallet (the Ledger looks good) and then move it to whichever site I want?
If it works that way, you can save on fees, stay off the grid (as in Coinbase can't see if there's a transaction or not) and move them wherever you want, when you want without out any delays.
Thoughts?

Need some info from you cryptoheads.
I'm on Coinbase, GDAX and Binance. I've tried the other sites but everyone is on a hold with starting new accounts.
There are coins that I want that are only offered on those I can't get on. I'm looking at Shape shift Coin switch but they don't hold the coins.
Can I trade/switch coins on those two sites and then move the coins to a hardware wallet? Then once one of the sites I have accounts with adds those coins, move them from the hardware wallet to the site?

I'm looking at two coins that require you to download a wallet to your pc from their website.
I don't want to download their wallet nor store coins on my pc. Can I download their wallet to a hardware wallet? Does it work like that or do these wallets require an operating system?
