Anyone made tea from gymnopilus junonius? They are abundant on the range.

Hi all what a sweet thread this is already. Interesting opening with P. alutacea, which I've not yet picked myself, though I've likely passed many by assuming they were S. semiglobata. Awesome pics as always Bob. I'm also keen to do more hiking and camping this year Bio, I've got the gear for it together, though I still haven't worked out where.
Good to see your awesomeness Gnomes, Makes me miss my old front yard patch, here's hoping the parkland near my house produces some subs this year after spreading spores for the last couple of years.
Nice finds Pinkban, hope it's the start of a great season!

I'm not certain but I think it's been said that the gyms in SA aren't active.

I always thought Gymnopilus purpuratus was the SA active one to look out for? at least that's what it says in some documents that I gathered a while ago.
Quote:
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Gymnopilus purpuratus is mushroom which grows in clusters on dead wood, pig dung and wood chip mulch. It is widely distributed and has been recorded in Argentina, Australia, Chile, the UK and Germany. It has a rusty orange spore print and contains the hallucinogen psilocybin.
A chemical analysis done by Jochen Gartz found that this species contains 0.34% psilocybin, 0.29% psilocin and 0.05% baeocystin. [1]

G'day VecAndSally, awesome to see you back. Loved following your posts in the past.
I believe some gyms in SA are active. Most specimens of G.Junonius I encounter bruise red but on occasion I've encountered green/blue bruising gyms which are likely active though I've never bioassayed them. Gyms may also contain gymnopilin
The G.Purpuratus or Dilepis (how to distinguish?) are common enough in the adelaide hills. Here's another observation

I posted this in a thread about cutting or pulling mushrooms, I thought I'd share it here as well as it's not really common knowledge.
Quote:
Arko said: Having seen the discussion on cutting or pulling in a few different places I thought it would be good to have a specific thread.
I've been cutting because when I started hunting that's what was recommended. Now the argument is going towards pulling because cutting leaves a stem stub that can rot and harm the mycelium.
So which is the best option? Thinking about not leaving a stem but to rot makes sense but when a whole mushroom is left it rots and doesn't seem to harm the mycelium.
Be good to hear the reasoning behind your vote.

brk said: I feel fairly strongly about this, because it's affecting a lot of native bushland here in SA (even on my own property). I don't know if cutting or pulling affects the fruit yield or not but please read the following carefully, as this is an excellent reason NOT to rip mushrooms out the ground.
Phytophthora cinnamomi is the main issue here in SA but NZ has a number of species that are just as damaging to the ecosystem.
Phytophthora sp. are among the most invasive and damaging to biodiversity of all known organisms (humans excepted ). It has been recorded as an environmental threat in more than 70 countries. It is known to infect >3000 plant species including more than 2500 Australian native species.
Phytophthora itself cannot be seen with the naked eye, but ‘Dieback’ is an obvious symptom often seen throughout the scrub (South Aus is my main concern, because I live here). Please avoid mushroom hunting in areas where you notice an unusual number of dead trees or shrubs.
The movement of infected plant material and soils remains the greatest threat to, uninfected bushlands. Hiking (specifically, mushroom hunting) can carry infected soil over large distances, and even back to your own property.
What you can do;
- Use scissors or a knife to cut the stipe/stalk mushroom off just above ground level. DO NOT pull it out the ground, as this is a sure fire way to spread this problem!!
- Don’t take your vehicle into or through an infected area, especially if the track is wet.
- Avoid walking through mud or puddles or streams when in areas that have been proclaimed infected or which appear infected.
- When moving out of one area, into another, remove all mud and vegetative material from boots and clothes. (Best practice is to spray your ‘cleaned’ boots with 70% methylated spirits and wait until they are dry before moving on). Use the hygiene stations provided at high risk sites.
- Never remove plant material from an infected zone, and remember that your own garden may be a source of infection - always ‘go bush’ with clean clothes, clean boots and a clean car - no mud or dirt that may carry spores.
I hope this helps to answer your question.

Good luck 1l2d! Coming across a patch of L. ceres is what reignited my interest in finding magic mushrooms. Well, that and listening to Bill Hicks...
Your friend needs to pull their head in, L. ceres may not be fatally toxic but will still make people sick, and some mushrooms out there will kill people in horrible ways.

Hi Sausages. I had read the Laughing Jim is inactive as far as psilocybin goes. Also read about the kava like high. Thought I'd try it myself. I'll put up a trip report after another try but this was about 50g fresh, cut fine, simmered for half hour and drunk with a dollop of honey. A nice little body high and I had a good sleep.
I'm hard to catch but looking for hunt buddies man. Big out to a good season for all!

Thanks man, good to be back. Keen to learn a lot more about common and rare fungus across the hills, names and taxonomy etc. so hopefully can share knowledge down the track. I believe fungi has much to offer that we don't really understand. Yet.
Super keen to find out more about gyms. So cheers! Here's to happy hunting!

Welcome back Trixxy This season is a comeback special. Those subs don't stand a chance. I haven't heard of summer psilocybes here. I did have a look around after the summer storms but no luck bar some pans. I figured because humid conditions are unusual and acute in SA summers perhaps the tropical species don't grow here. I guess it's possible they will go multiple seasons without fruiting as many species do until conditions are favourable.
