Do you ever have a problem with the wire melting? I use a propane torch to sterilize my tools and if I let it glow too long it melts. If I'm just doing inoculations I sometimes use a lamp instead, but if I just heat it until it glows and pull it away the torch is fine.
I wonder if my wire is just crappy?

Would electrical terminal rings work as an inoculation loop. Figured if I crimped one onto the end of a piece of metal it'd be pretty close to purchasing one and cheap and easy to replace as they carbonized.

Here's what they look like hopefully they work, worse comes to worse I drill them out and file them down smooth again. Thoughts?

Kanthal A1 wire is cheaper than nichrome 80 usually, and will hold up better over time. SS316L wire holds up even longer, but costs a little more than nichrome 80. I'd specifically use like 18 or 20 awg wire if I were to do this instead of twisting the wire unless you want your loop to hold more liquid, in which case a Clapton wire (it's like a roundwound guitar string) would do better than twisted.
I like this TEK though. I have lots of wire lying around. And I think an X-acto handle too.
To make the twisting easier, you could just use a drill instead of doing it by hand. Still use your rod, but fasten the loose ends in the chuck, hold tension and twist till it breaks.

Update on terminal ring inoculation loop. As you said doesn't heat up easy. Pretty much impossible with an alcohol lamp. Had it in the blue flame for 10 minutes and only got searing. However propane or butane torch does a wonder. Red hot in seconds (cranked a bit higher then needs be for agar work but it worked). crimping the ring on the end of the rod does wonders for expelling the heat from your hand. Felt warm to the touch after several heat cycles but not over bearing . However the heat that was transferred from the rod was beautifully taken care of by the heat shrink wrapping which gave steady stable precision even with nylon gloves on. However I have to down size a bit with it. 6 gauge terminal rings are way to big to work with on Petri dishes. Plan on finding a smaller rod to use 22 gauge rings on to see if it will make a difference in heating with my alcohol lamp, will test layered heat shrink to see if it makes a difference in heat exchange on the smaller rods and rings. If I can fine tune it I'd like to send you one Bod and get the opinion of aTC. However I'd also like to try out your from the original post. Nothing I buy seems to come with twist ties, any recommended places to pick up wire as it seems like a pain in the ass to cut open a moderate size of my 22 awg sheathing at work.

I ordered some inoculation loops online awhile back. While I was waiting for them to arrive I saw this post, ran down to the local ACE Hardware and picked up the Xacto and a roll of SS picture hanging wire. I went with about a 6 inch length. It's way more rigid than the commercial loops and I love it. I look upon the ones I bought with disdain now.

Ace hardware smoked a lot of weed in the basement of ace hardware before. No one trusts some kid with hardware advice. Same dumbasses would be the ones paying someone to install replacement faucet washers for a drip because they "weren't mechanical people" or some other excuse

It's always nice to find people like that with this hobby . You ask most people if they carry agar or Light DME and they look at you like your from a different planet.

suggestion on the item to use to form the loop (instead of the thermometer).
Lowe's has some "music wire" in the section with all the small weird hard to find stuff, with all the small nuts and bolts and hobby items. It's actually in the hobby items drawers. They are very small diameter rods made of hardened spring steel. An assortment of diameters, either 4 or 6, or some such. Mine are scattered or I would count them. Ebay has them as well in an absolute plethora of quantities and sizes (diameters). They are usually about 6" long.
you can custom size your inoculation loop to just about any size you desire or could dream up.

Why don't you just make one for throwing away
btw.: A kickass way to make the loop and spiral is with a drilling machine: make a temporary loop on one end of the wire. That is just for the drilling machine to be able to have a grip on it. Then vise it in the drilling machine like you would with a drill bit. If done correctly it becomes dead straight really easy and quick. Just made one myself (not entirely straight hehehe)

Comrade, what gauge do you recommend for nichrome and/or kanthal? I'd like a loop sturdy enough to scrape mycelium off a plate like some of the plastic disposables are capable of doing.
Also, have you ever heard of a mycology tool xalled a "fungus hoe?" According to this link, it seems like a tool everyone on the forum could appreciate. Ctrl-F the term to get to it quickly: http://www.disknet.com/indiana_biolab.
I think 14-18g nichrome would be preferred on the hoe. What are your thoughts?
