The Paris Catacombs * 5
    #24287151 - 05/01/17 04:05 PM (6 years, 10 months ago)

So I thought some of you might enjoy this so I'll share some pics/stories

I've been living in Paris for over 10 years now, and I've been exploring the underground for a year and a half. The whole city was built on top of the existing quarries (that's where they extracted the stone to build the city) and the network is still here today. There's a small part of those tunnels that's now open to the public (it's only about 2 kilometers long), that's the museum you can legally visit and see all the bones etc. But obviously that's only a small fraction of the real network, which is closed to the public.

There's a huge subculture surrounding it : people called "cataphiles" go down there to explore, throw parties, drink, tag.. Whatever you can think of. Entry is illegal and there's entrances scattered across the city, but they're kept a secret by the cataphiles to avoid more degradations etc. It's a huge network of tunnels, about 300 kilometers long so it's real easy to get lost if you don't know what you're doing. There's usually raves and parties on the week-end so it's definitely a parteh place too  :cookiemonster:

Here are some pics, enjoy  (had to re-size some of them so quality may be crappy)

Nice.  15 years ago I did the official visit for tourists. Than I heard it was closed indefinately.

I didn't know there was actually a whole community colonizing the underground!

No I am tramatized.  Love has a spell on me.  I Wish someone could explain my life.

Swearing everything off other than forced drugs and tobacco.  Trying to not take the while pharamcy in the ankle.

Hope I cam sleep better tonight. Haven't shit since over a day ago.  Got hooked on invega and booze combo right away.  Came off depakote and started the lotto and booze game.

It is evil.  The money I spend on no hope.

I am not cooking food.  Kinda just smoke as soon as I do that.  More into quick food right now.

Far from broke though so that is good.  Sick of people relying on me formanswers when they have a damn brain themselves.

Booze just got damn evil.  Tobacco is sorta a thinking thing and self harm.  Hard to understand how bad tobacco is.  It sorta guides me to.  Learned how to be ocd with cannabis and tobacco.  Imhad my rituals.  Always wanting change and totally stupid to what all was possible.

Aren't there a bunch of catacombs under Florence and Rome as well? I'd really like to explore these places someday

Good question, but nope ! The network is simply too vast and complex for them to navigate, they don't know where the entrances are and you need headlamps or a good source of light (which homeless people don't usually tend to have)

Yeah there's catacombs under Rome but I'm pretty sure it's way way smaller, and open to the public. Looks beautiful too, I'd love to visit someday

I bet there's at least one crazy fuq living deep in the catacombs somewhere who only comes out at night to pilfer food and water, then disappears again long before the Sun comes back up so no one is even aware of his existence

Eh I dunno how I would feel tripping around all those dead people tho

I bet parts of those catacombs are haunted too, if paranormal entities exist then the catacombs would theoretically be teeming with them I would think

Deep inside the catacombs the dead and living merge the connection between worlds is thin. I'd totally watch a horror movie about some demonic entity in the catacombs.

I love spooky shit but wile tripn that would be unimaginable crazy.
I love to trip under street lights an old growth woods nature n lights type stuff so that would be quite the experience, underground ,devoid of life filled with death n rocks. I could imagine myself getting lost with tie'n myself with thin rope an marking my path with glow in the dark paint.
It's right up my alley though i love caves n deep sea shit.

There's bones in only about 10% of the tunnels though. And I've never seen or heard anything about ghosts, sorry to disappoint  I've tripped down there and it's definitely a strange experience, but not because of the dead. There's absolutely no light and no sound. If you stay silent for a minute or two, you'll start to hear your heart beat and your other organs. Pretty weird.

Damn. That's awesome. You're extremely lucky to have access to that place OP. That's like the main place I want to visit if I ever leave my country. I've wanted to go there since I was a kid and first saw it on TV.

I had no idea it is so expansive. 300 kilometers!

I'll try my hardest to get in contact with some of these people if I ever make it to France.

Man the catacombs are awesome. I went to the tourist ones once, however I would sure like to explore some off limits zones and find some nearly unexplored tunnels.
I wonder how one would go about about entering one of these if you are not a local?

You need a guide, you can't just go down on your own. First of all you won't find any entrance on your own (out of 60,000 manholes in the city, only 10/20 of them lead to the catacombs, and some of them are sealed) and even if you do, you need a map. Even if you find one, you need to know where you're going. Always go with someone who's been there before and who can guide you. Trust me, you do not want to die alone and screaming for help that won't come.

There's some but they're scared of any sound and when I walk I'm usually blasting loud music, so you'll rarely see any. It's a really clean place too, any water you see you could technically drink.

They're sealed.. And reopened later by the local fauna  It's a cat and mouse game and it's been going on for over 50 years, so the history's not going anywhere. But it's like anywhere else really : some people care about their environement, some don't. There's no way to control what everyone does down there

When I go to Paris again Ima find em or find a guide, I've always done a lot of exploring for spots like that, no way miles of tunnels could stay hidden for long. I already know a lot of really good spots out here which are pretty secluded despite the large crusty population.

I'm pretty big on leaving no trace and keeping shit like that to myself though, you tell one wrong person and a week later there's a dozen drunks hanging out by the entrance blowing up the spot.

Seclusion goes hand in hand with exploring.

Yeah there's a tacit agreement that anything that goes down has to go back up, but like I said some people don't give a shit and leave their trash laying around, which is pretty sad. I always make sure to go back up with a full trash bag, pick up anything I find, and there's regular cleaning operations organized by the cataphiles to make sure the network stays somewhat clean. It's a complex situation though, because if it wasn't for this subculture, the underground would've been blown up and destroyed a long time ago. But there's always someone down there and there's no way of making sure it's empty, so they can't just blow it up or seal all the entrances.. It has its ups and downs really, there may be a lot of graffiti and trash and raves, but it keeps the place alive.

Thats cool, I clean up litter when leaving a spot, doesnt take more than a minute.

Underground scenes are always like that, you're bound to get undesireable elements leaking in... everything in life is like that really lol

That's pretty cool, I've always wanted to explore the catacombs and see the real 'underground' of paris .

We did a party a couple of years ago with a french crew in a tunnel complex outside of Reims, some of the carvings on the wall were from the first world war, it was pretty cool .
