high fidelity
    #2428690 - 03/13/04 09:44 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I just picked up a sweet dolby 5.1 top of the line stereo system from a vendor at work. It is two years old now but i perfect condition. He had it packed in the origional packing in the origional plastic. I know it is in like new shape cause noone who is anal enough to store all the origional packing would misuse the sterio that goes in it. Besides he is a good christian (haha). The floor speakers I got with it are older but still crank.
The run down:
A Jammin Surround System (Just add a big screen):
1) Sony STR-V555ES receiver, Dolby 5.1, DTS surround sound, too much to
list. (Top of the line Sony ES receiver in 2002.) Tons of A/V
input/outputs. 120w x 5 channels into 8 ohms. Bought new two years ago for
$1050.00.
2) Polk Audio RM7500 surround speakers (4 corners (front l/r, rear l/r), 1
center). 12"h x 7"w x 5"d. Black polished finish. Bought new two years ago
for $800.00
3) Polk Audio PSW650 (250 watts) powered subwoofer (two 10 inch drivers).
19"h x 18"w x 19"d. Fits under end table. Black polished finish. Bought new
two years ago for $450.00
4) Polk Audio SRS 3.1 (48" tall, 16" wide, 14" deep, 7 drivers in each).
Matching pair (left and right) with SRS cable between each. Oak wood with
black cloth grill. Rated to handle up to 500 watts per side. Bi-Amped
inputs. 100lbs each. Bought new in 1991 for $1855.00.

You may like your shpongle or infected mushroom through headphones but when it is pipe through a dolby 5.1 surround you experiance it in a physical dimension aswell. There are some low tones in that Infected Mushroom (converting vegitarians) that I never knew existed.

Im in love with it!!!

Sounds nice. Nothing like listening to music through a real system! I have a Bose surround system but I mostly use it when watching movies (if I want to show it off I pop in the 'lobby shootout scene' from the first Matrix movie...great scene when cranked up in full 5.1!). But I do have one dvd audio album that is in full 5.1 surround output. It is the Blue Man Groups album "Audio". They built their own studio and recorded/mastered the album to take full advantage of 5.1. Its fuckin amazing to sit in the middle of the room and listen to it!

You now need a super audio cd player. I wish more bands would release their albums on that. That shit is sweet!

I haven't had a chance to check out the Matrix on it yet but am anxious to do so. I'll have to try and find that Blue Man Group cd, it sounds pretty cool.

That is the next thing. I have a 6 cd changer but it is a POS without optical output. I am playing them on the DVD [player now because it does have optical but it is sort of a POS too and the random func sucks ass on it.

Here are some snips of some interesting info regards DTS and DD5.1 on music cd's:

In fact the "DTS CDs" are not really CDs properly so called. To use the CD name and logo a disc must comply with the CD Red Book standards which specify only one form of digital audio - 16/44.1 PCM and nothing else. DTS audio discs do not comply with this standard, so should not be called CDs.

The reason why we will not see DD5.1 audio discs is that the future of music on disc lies with DVD-Audio (once the format wars with Sony/Philips SACD have been resolved), which will allow for multichannel digital audio

-----------------------------------------------

:To use the CD name and logo a disc must comply with the CD Red Book standards

If thats the case neither CD-ROMs nor VideoCD would be allowed to be called CDs.. Dont confuse things, A CD can be a CD even if it's not a CD-DA!

: The reason why we will not see DD5.1 audio discs is that the future of music on disc lies with DVD-Audio

There are music recordings in DD5.1 widely available, but only on DVD-Video. A normal CD-player can't pass DD5.1 bitstream thru since it doesn't recognize the format.

DTS-CDs however are formatted like Audio-CD (Red Book) even though they contain the DTS bitstream instead of the PCM bitstream. This way they can be played in a regular CD-player with digital out and a DTS decoder (You will only get noise from the CDs internal D/A however..)

If you get that Blue Man Group album make sure you buy the DVD-audio version. They also put it out in a standard CD version and you just get regular old stereo sound from that.
