Do u cover your front face camera?

I know a lot of people are paranoid about their front facing cameras on either their phones or laptops. A paranoia of being hacked and people spying on you.
Do u tape yours up?

I don't because I would prefer to notice I am being hacked when the camera light turns on unexpectedly.
Some devices have the ability to turn on the webcam without the light and others do not.

If I were to be in a position where illegal things where to be caught by any camera I got the camera turned away.
Better yet at a different location all together.

Are you saying that some cameras can't turn on without the light coming on? Is it a hardware matter?
That'd sure make for some necessary reading to learn about how cameras work and what i've got myself.

I certainly do. Not so much because I'm afraid of being hacked, but because targeted advertising data collection methods are down right creepy. I started covering after my phone "saw" me using Scotchbrite sponges...and the next day Pandora had a totally new commercial for me about Scotchbrite sponges. I told a few friends, and many had experienced the same thing. Last year Apple acquired Emotient, a startup that seeks to teach AI how to accurately identify and portray human emotion. Other companies do this already with a more altruistic motive, imo (with the goal of teaching autistic kids how to recognize emotion). Every tech company out there worth its salt is doing this. Now, my main reason for opposing this insidious data collection is this: what could I possibly gain by giving someone or someTHING else every thing they possibly need to successfully manipulate me? Would I play poker with someone who knew exactly what my hand was? HELL NO.

Yes and yes.

That was a coincidence. Your phone does not use your camera to spy on you and market things.

Sometimes it is good to be manipulated.
One time I did a bunch of google searches for microscopes and cameras, and the next day Google Adwords started showing me ads for microscopes and microscope camera adapters. I really needed a microscope camera adapter, so I bought it.
I prefer ads for things I like to ads for things I hate or don't care about. Ads for things I like are less annoying, even if I don't buy one.

With the greatest respect, Szymon Sidor would disagree, I think. People told me I was paranoid when I put a post-it over my webcam...until they saw the pic of Zuckerberg doing the same thing a few years later, that is. As far as that sponge advert being just a coincidence; if it was, it was one hell of one-- I'd say like getting struck twice by lightning. lol! Never heard a commercial for any type of home goods product before that, or since-- only for hospitals, weight-loss clinics and surgeries and car dealers mostly. All of which make me feel somewhat secure in my privacy because if anything, I'm healthy, under-weight, and broke :) One of my friends went to Ace to buy an axe to chop wood. He paid in cash, did absolutely no online searches for axes or hardware stores beforehand, and had his smart phone in his hand when he bought it. The next day, Facebook was suggesting he join axe-enthusiast/woodsman/lumberjack-type groups. Another coincidence? It should be noted here that many cooperate stores (Target being the most well-known) employ a technology called visible light communication (VLC). This allows your movements (well, your smart phone's movements) through the store to be tracked and analyzed through Wi-fi and/or Bluetooth, calculating how much time you spend in a particular section, etc. This data is used to track customer's spending habits and how they move through space...what catches their eye, what doesn't, etc. Is this how my friend's quiet axe interest almost instantly appeared on Facebook? Who knows. I agree that a targeted ad can be useful and less annoying than than the old shot-gun advertising approach of throwing everything at everyone, but the price we pay for that convenience is greater than we are usually aware. I can't, however, think of any time that I would want to be actually manipulated. Guided? Yes. Catered to? Yes. Manipulated? That's still a big fat no. Data-mining is the gold rush of this century, and it would be just plain silly (imho) to believe that any cooperate entity is merely collecting info for the convenience of its customers, or that we would always know when/how we are being tracked. The government may have hard time finding hackers who don't smoke weed, but Mr. CEO prob doesn't give a shit what you smoke, (or what nefarious tactics you use)as long as you're raking in the benjamins for him
P.S. Nothing but respect and admiration for you Allen, and I honestly can't thank you enough for what you're doing! This forum is such an amazing wealth of information; now THIS form of "information collection" is cooperative and voluntary by a community of people who all love the same beautiful and mysterious and elusive branch of botany known as fungi. IT ROCKS! Thank you and keep up the amazing work!! <3

Not anymore. The police can't break encryption. Even people who are good at math have a very hard time breaking modern encryption, and the police suck at math.

i am pretty sure they have deals with phone companies
i was hanging around a drug dealer whose place got searched from snapchat
they were paying attention to me too and whenever i would leave it felt like they had my location on lock
as soon as i left the door they police would come crawling by my car nice and slow
i parked in multiple locations too and each time i would leave they drove nice and slow by me, happened at least 5 times

The phone companies can't see what is on your smartphone either.
They can see your location, and the data you send. The police can use this data too.....but that is a lot different than being able to access your files and pictures.

Because the encryption algorithms modern smart phones use are very strong - it would take a supercomputer longer to crack it than a human lifespan.
It is possible that a mistake was made in the implementation allowing backdoor access, but the government wouldn't use such a hole for just anyone. It would have to be an extremely important case, or else they would tip their hand and the flaw would get fixed.

They aren't always mistakes. A relatively well known example is the backdoor that allowed amazon to delete the book '1984' from kindle devices remotely.

The cell phone companies turn over all data they have to the police.
What they have is your location, numbers you call, texts you send or receive and any unencrypted internet traffic.
What they don't have is encrypted network traffic (which should be most of it these days), and access to your phone.

Some devices have the ability to turn on the webcam without the light and others do not.
You can tell if the light has come on if you use mildly translucent tape like the blue painters masking tape. Also allows you to easily confirm the camera is actually covered compared to black tape.

I rock the blue masking tape, too- as do many of my friends. I'm sure I'll be told that it was just a coincidence, but when I started covering the cameras on my iphone, I suddenly got crazy notifications from apps that had been quiet for months, as well as random notifications from apps telling me how their functionality would be improved if I would turn on my location services. It was like my phone was mad that I had blindfolded it.
