Funny that the chinese used straw then switched it to a net tent for their crop rows.

Ask yourself "why are they coming up around the edges of the cardboard and not growing up underneath the cardboard?"

very interesting. Personal observation ; I have seen many morels growing in heavy fescue along wooded areas. They were the white variety.

Grass isn't exactly a good shade plant. Plus moisture loss happens quickly. Early spring and its not growing tall. Later on possibly but the trigger has already been applied. Grassy locations aren't the typical habitat either. Ones with spring ephemerals and other plants are. Dutchmans Breeches, cleavers, etc etc The biggest problem with undergrowth is the bushes. Mayapples and other types of larger plants too. Early spring before the growth gets going is the time when it happens. When its just the leaf cover that blocks the light.

Tall fescue is a cool season grass. It is used primarily in water ways by farmers to control erosion. In spring ( actually through winter here)when and before morels are out it is very dense and usually close to a foot tall. I agree on the black morels in open areas. We usually find them scattered . But we have found large numbers of the white in these fescue ditches. Sometimes the grass areas save the day. You don't have to believe me , but my personal experiences I am talking about.

I have seen "whites" in grassy areas too. But I'm just saying its not their typical habitat. I think spots that have too much cover and protection from light are less likely to produce. But I think that your location with the grass doesnt have a tree canopy overhead so the only protection from summer sunlight is under the blades of grass. Probably it creates a micro-canopy that works the same way as the woods. I suppose the grass is next to a creek?

If your grassy location is in the woods and next to a river I would say that the morels are definitely showing up in other locations in that wooded area and not just in grass. If the spores land in the grassy area they have no choice but to grow there. Plus being that close to the source of the spores.

Yes, we've seen that.
Give it a try and see if it works for you. From what I've heard (haven't tried it myself) it doesn't work ... and when Gary did it the mushrooms tasted like cardboard.
If Gary was able to grow morels indoors reliably then he'd probably have a thriving business today ... but there's nothing.

I don't think every mushroom is meant to be cultivated indoors. No reason why outdoor seasonal harvests are not perfectly acceptable, you know like plants. I think the trick is to find effective outdoor morel cultivation strategies which also has the advantage of being combined with other crops such as apple orchards or whatnot. I wonder what the Chinese method morels taste like? Do sclerotia produced indoors then introduced to a suitable habitat out doors for fruiting yield good results in terms of taste?

theres no photos of any controlled condition on the page,, just close up of some mushrooms fruiting in tubs or outdoors
and he charges like 110$ for some spawn how ridiculous is that..
if you post telling people to make there own spawn easily he will delete your post..
I give him credit thought people actually pay money for some spawn/dirt mix..

He's probably bringing in the soil from outside just before the season starts and fruiting them in a shed or patio.

Drainage. Otherwise the water will stay contained in that. Coverage like a mesh netting over it.

The bed doesn't have a bottom its just a way to keep it a bit contained looking so drainage should be fine.

just to be safe I would drill a few holes around the base, soil around here anyway has been above field capacity and doesn't want to take on any more
