I definitely recommend using shitty thin garbage bags as a liner. It cuts down on side pins almost entirely. I did it with some transparent bags that were too thick, so the sub didn't cling to it. Not worth the mess. It also makes cleaning the tub much easier.

Poor surface conditions do

While this may be true, LACK of light does a good job of PREVENTING pinning.

Thank God you stepped in.  That was a close call.  And I stopped my side and bottom pinning by going to opaque trays (back in 1998) that stop the light...which is also a requirement for pinning.  Since I don't line trays with any kind of plastic, plenty of air gets in.

Back in 1998 home mycology was in his infancy and pretty much 99% of the methods, concepts and teks that were current back in the day have become completely obsolete, either because the new methods work much better or because the information/knowledge has shown to be flat out wrong.

A tub or tray will pin and fruit in total darkness, the fruits just won't look healthy and the myc colony would not be able to perform well and display its full potential. But try and deprive a sub of air and see what happens.

With regular cubes, not getting side pins in the first flush without a liner is very easy, you just have to maintain proper surface conditions, making sure the surface receives lots of FAE while keeping it nice and hydrated, with a good evaporation rate.
Light is a pinning trigger but it pales in comparison with 100% colonization or fresh air exchange.

Maybe you improved some in those 19 years cultivating and learned to give the sub proper surface conditions, so your trays stopped getting side pins, doesn't matter if it was an opaque or clear tray.

Get on with the times 'ol hand

Light has nothing to do with side pins
Cubes will grow in the complete darkness they just look sick

Clear tubs, no liners, no side pins.

I guess I need to.  Thanks for steering me right.

And I don't grow cubes specifically.  I have a suspicion that cubes will grow anywhere they have to, just to survive.  I have not experienced Ps. Mexicana pinning or fruiting in total darkness myself.

I suggest not using liners just so you have to learn how to do it right quicker

Shit I just grab the side of the sub and flip it over.  Easy to do and even easier if you do it during a dunk.

I would definitely get as much off as you can cause if not they will turn black and mushy.  Its gross and will lead to mold eventually.  Leaving aborts and snall blobs is not the same as leaving stumps which will just convert back to myc

I've had no mold on my stumps so far. I just go at it with an exacto knife, and if there were clusters with some leftover, I slice them into deli slices. They look really cool once dried because of the blueing, like little nugs

Why is there so much hate on liners around here lately? Theyre a great cultivation tool and not just for getting rid of side pins. Advising someone with a side pin problem not to use a liner seems a little misleading imo.

The stumps revert back to mycelium and are a part of the mycelium network. Therefore are contam resistant just like your substrate.
Think about when you put clone tisue to agar. It turns into mycelium

Hey man, was that a full size mono?? How the hell did you get the substrate out like that?? Rekon would make harvesting easy as

It's most likely one of his 55qt unmodified monos.
He just pours water in untill the substrate floats to the top and then harvests while the substrate rehydrates
Talk about being efficient as fuck

How do you rehydrate your monos with liners?  I might have to do that in a couple of weeks after my first flush.
