What is this on my cakes?
    #24276296 - 04/27/17 03:09 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

Hello everyone this is my first post on this site. I have got a lot of information here over the past few months but never registered.  I have been following RR's cultivation video for brf cakes. I inoculated 12 jars march 6th.  Half are 100% the others are maybe 90%.  One of the 100%ers has a pin about an inch long.  My questions right now are should I birth the 6 now or can I wait until all 12 are ready? And if someone could tell me what they think the stuff in the pictures are please.

Looks bacterial.
Doesn't hurt to do 6 now then others later, especially if they're already pinning...

Ok thanks.  Any thoughts on what the discoloured spots are? I am thinking it's nothing to worry about but I'm not sure

Like I said, it looks bacterial. It should be ok as long as you don't have stagnant air. The ones I'm referring to are pics 1,3,4,6. Pics 2 and 5 look diff, but maybe still just bacterial.
Let us know how it goes.

What's the difference between bacterial and a contaminate?

Bacterial contamination is still a contamination.
So is a mold contamination.
The difference is that bacterial is not nearly as severe. The cakes can still grow and most likely will overcome the bacteria, creating no problems. I think it basically just lives on top of the cake and doesn't necessarily colonize it.
Whereas mold takes over(colonizes) the substrate and releases spores. It is just bad, nasty, and unwanted. It can affect future grows and isn't worth any risk. It's just a whole different level of not okay.

Good luck.
