How to tell if your fruiting chamber is to dry ? (Edit: More pics in posts)
    #24276687 - 04/27/17 05:35 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

Help
Unsure if my fruiting chamber or cakes are too dry. What are some classic signs to tell if your setup is too dry ?

GT Spores are being used

Edit: these are the updated picture of both cakes

Im a noob, i can try to help. I physically feel my perlite, can feel when no moisture is in it. I moisten it while misting, the over spray does well. The cakes i have seen shrink and get a bruising color, like blue ball ink pen color when it seems the surface is dry. Also the smell, seems a nice moist cake has a lovely mushroom smell to it. The dry ones not so much sweet smelling. Now i may be wrong but this is what i have noticed and found so far. Hope it is some help!!

Forget about the fruiting chamber, the only humidity that matters is on the surface of the cakes. Post pics and the Shroomery Customer Service Team will tell you if it's dry.

All you have to do to maintain proper surface conditions is mist the cakes from a certain distance, so tiny beads of moisture will fall gently on the cakes. You can check this easily with the flash light tool of your phone.
Then you let that water evaporate some and repeat the process.

Again, forget about the fruiting chamber.

I agree josex. I have read and seen alot, and even my experience now as a noob. A proper sgfc you should not have to worry with humidity and all. Mine will be at 92%rh after misting, be done to 80%rh a few hours later. The best part though, i would rather look at the glistening cakes than a gauge.

Yeah they're dry, mist them. I don't know if it's just the bad quality of the pics but I don't like the looks of them. Try grabbing the cake with one hand to take a closer pic with flash, you aren't going to disturb (or contam) them at all if you do that.

Also what type is it. I had a few flushes of my GT before my PE even pinned. That may be a factor also?

Ok thanks, i have now ditched the first cake. And i will re-soaked my perlite as i was worried that i didnt rinse it through well enough. Should i re-dunk the second cake as it looks too dry ? Bearing in mind i dunked it for 24 hour first time round

When your fc looks dry, it looks dry. U can also tell by sticking your hand inside the chamber right after u take the lid offm should feel moist like being in a bathroom after a hot shower.

Also cakes will start to shrink and look "hard". When they are moist, they look softer and more alive. U will notice it over time. Takes practice and a keen eye for it.

Also feeling the perlite is a good method. Make sure it feels moist to the touch. If it feels completely dry, yer in trouble.

The way I've always gauged if a chambers rH is too dry is if the caps have cracks on them, otherwise if the caps aren't cracking, it's just fine for mushrooms. That's like under 50% rH. Any other forms of dry in any situation without cracking caps is all because the grower isn't misting properly.
