I run into people who claim to pick shrooms in cattle pastures all the time but no one ever has any shrooms or proof. Anyone know of any truth behind this? Northern cali, we are talking sacramento foothills area

Definetly NOT Ps. cubensis!
Maybe, maybe subbalteatus, however they are much more common in horse manure than cow.
Another possiblitiy could be Ps. semilanceata, but, still, unlikely.
Panaeolus campanulatus will grow from dung in that area, but, they are inactive.

Chances are they are lying, or they picked something else and assumed it was a cubensis. Cubensis in Northen California is very very very very unlikely if not impossible.

Nope, but you're right tahoe... this urban legend is rampant in Sac. and the bay. Everybody has " a friend" who picked some in a cow pasture and "dude we tripped balls".

I hear ya man :P
Not nearly enough humidty to have cubes growing, but you can find cyans, amantias and gyms in the sacromento area. Used to play 'kick back' with giant A. Muscarias when younger in the sacto-foothills.
Wow just realized this is a really old thread someone brought up... ooops.

as far south as santa cruz where angry shroom and me live, ive only found cyans where i was told i would find cubes.. i heard the famous (not really) UCSC campus up here was loaded with them in the fields, most by the edges... Sure enough the edges of the fields were loaded with eucalyptus and occassional alder.... well its nearly obvious what they were finding. I did find a mushroom on highway one heading through santa cruz, davenport, pascadero and early SF that i am 99.9% sure was a cube, growing directly out of 3 piles of cow dung that were on each other creating a triangle of circles almost. looked like a good chunk of healthy mycelium too... I've heard too many stories of the findings of cubes up there recently too, but i cant say that ide trust others words for that shit, considering the idiots around here (my friends who at those poisonous ones).

I've heard of people picking mushrooms off cow shit in Laytonville/Willits and Potter Valley of Mendocino County, which are claimed to be Cubensis and seem to grow exclusively at one time in the year around September when the tempature is in the 70s-80s should a lucky rain come along. But it could be a Pan or Liberty Cap, or it could have been bullshit, much less growing off it.
