Hadn't thought about canning LC broth before.  Also, nice touch with the gentamicin sulphate solution.  Thank you, MorelMan.

Will be researching this next time grain prep is done using a quart, wide mouthed jar.  Results, and ensuing questions will be posted in this thread.

Thanks for sharing this approach. I'll be canning my grain water and beer wort from now on. The sediment is good for fertilizer. How do you think green tea would perform vs. gentamicin sulfate as an antibacterial?

I just take my boiling hot grain soak water put it in a clean jar then put it in the fridge for up to a week or the freezer forever.

I usually do the fridge step just to settle out particulate

I have no need to keep it longer than a week I guess. and I have a fridge for mycology. By the time it would go bad I will have made new grains to get new grain soak water from.

I gathered, just wondering where you're coming from doing all the stuff I thought was pointless.

I wouldn't use antibiotics unless I had a stubborn culture that needed cleaning. it's bad habit to just use it all the time and can cause you to drag bacteria along unknowingly

You're welcome, Hamloaf.

The GS Solution can be ordered online from livestock supply outlets. It's about $25 for 250ml. It used to be available in 500ml for the same price. So stock up, prices are rising.

Thanks for revealing the source of the GS solution.  Was also going to ask why you removed the sediment from your broth, but you've already answered that.  This post is a great tip for us LC enthusiasts.

I prefer not including the sediments and there is no difference, aside from murky lc when you shake or stir.
If you do like murky broth, shake the canning jar before transferring the broth from storage.
I don't know about the antibacterial properties of green tea, but I'll venture that it pales in comparison to gentamicin sulphate.
If it was as effective, it would be sold as an antibiotic.

Yeah, I prefer clear LC and cloudy beer. The sediment goes in the garden.

I'm inclined to use natural rather than synthetic antibiotics for various uninteresting reasons. GS is probably a more effective general antibiotic, and it's great against E. coli, staph, pseudomonads, and other pathogens. Green tea is known to be effective against staph and cholera, and the catechins inhibited Clostridium perfringens germination in at least one study.

Ideally I'd find a natural or naturally-derived antibiotic that's only effective against a subset of endospore-forming genera known to infect cereal grains. But there are so many different bacteria, all of them undesirable in mush cult, that small quantities of a potent general antibiotic may be more useful than normal quantities of a specific one for now.

Either way, the impending antibiotics crisis won't happen because we used GS by the gram in mushroom LC.

fuel ethanol industry uses massive amounts of antibiotics since lactic acid bacteria (LABs) cut into ethanol yield during corn fermentation. they could boil/sterilize the corn mash but that takes too much energy. rather they lobbied and lubed up the politicians and get a waiver and then are allowed to pump these "green fuel" ethanol fermentations full of antibiotics so the yeast have no competition. then dump those antibiotics right back into the water table.

so any of that corn ethanol e85 or whatever garbage is pretty fucked too. Green people tend to stop their research where their feelings start to agree so we have all these wonderful eco terroristic "green technologies"

I agree, a lot of "green" industries are simply eco-terrorism with a feel-good façade.

The only solution I can implement is to keep as much energy in my home for as long as possible, and avoid certain things like perlite, peat moss, and pesticides. Real crisis mitigation only requires an immediate worldwide revolution in thought and behavior at every level of society, so no big deal.

Anyway, this is getting off topic and we can't solve the world's problems in this thread. I'm interested in continuing the discussion privately, though.
