Longer PC times result in melted gasket... now what?
    #24275398 - 04/27/17 09:32 AM (7 years, 8 months ago)

I have an old Presto 21 quart PC. Been using it for years. I replace the gasket every 6 months or so. I use the PC twice a week.

Recently, I've realized my PC times are not long enough, so I've gone from 3 hours to 5.

I have 14 quarts of rye in four bags, and 3 quarts of water. (good procedure, spacing, pre-venting, etc)

But now my gasket is melting. Its OM Presto replacement part 09907

Its a bummer, but perhaps I need the AA which forgoes the gasket.

Advice?

Huge bags take much longer.

Are you running it three to five hours because the bags are really large? like to penetrate the grains deep in the middle? it seems like a long time but I've never used the bags before.  also are you reducing the heat after your water/pc gets to temperature? or leaving it on High the whole time?

EDIT: oh you answered the cook time question while I was responding...haha

Yeah man,  I have the same PC as you,  but only use it for Pasties and jars.  If you roll with giant bags,  probably gotta bite the bullet and get the crazy expensive AA

Seems odd they don't make the gasket out of high temp material. Kinda cheap of them.

I just found an aftermarket gasket in a different color... maybe its not silly low temp rubber. (I realize most aren't PC'ing for this long, but still.

They either melt or they don't.
That gasket is at the same temperature 20 minutes into operation as it is 5 hours into operation. Maintained well a presto gasket lasts me over a year

Presto doesn't recommend oiling... so I don't. this thing is only a few months old.

That doesn't look like melt that looks like degradation from not being lubricated or using the wrong oil for lubricant

I use Vaseline it's the wrong kind of oil but the gasket lasts so long for me that I don't give a shit
Silicone oil/grease will work great

They don't recommend it since they're assuming it's being used for food and they would have to trust everyone buys food grade lubricant and not only that, they also have to apply it properly to comply with it being food grade and food safe.

For mycology purpose, lube that bitch up

if you use a 'oil' use a high smoke point oil. dont use olive oil, it will burn the gasket.

just use p.jelly. it also useful for ass play but has been link to cancers.. but what isnt these days.

I've been reading gasket threads here and people fix their problems by NOT oiling. Ha! And Presto write in not only all caps, but in Bold not to oil. But something isn't right with my situation. I'll give it a try. Maybe I just eat through gaskets until I buy a AA.

I'll try petrolium Jelly

I've read that PC write up of yours a few times in the past. Its very concise and brings up a number of things that people don't talk about. Many thanks.

I keep a spare gasket around. But despite Vaseline being bad for the gasket its what works for me.
