My idea for a fruiting chamber

I have this idea to just pour an inch of water on the bottom of the fruiting chamber, then to place the cakes on a wire mesh platform that hovers above the water. This would save me the need to use perlite (it's hard to get where I live). Never tried it, but I think this should keep the chamber humid just as well as if you use perlite on the bottom. What do you think?

Yep. Not to mention, you couldn't do this with a SGFC; water would come right out of the bottom.

I thought contaminations were no longer a problem once the cakes are fully colonized?

It won't keep the humidity up as well as you think. The water only has one surface for evaporation to occur.
Perlite has lots of surfaces and is aided by fresh air coming in through the bottom.

LOL, Sounds like my first idea/post on the forums. Bottom line is that there are a few very normal fruiting chambers, and they are accepted because they work best. SGFC and monotubs, and all variants are perfect for at home studies.

There are places that ship perlite world-wide, and there are other alternatives to perlite too.

Your mushrooms need FAE(fresh air exchange) not a bunch of stale air in a tub that's going to suffocate them and make em look like shit. They also need high RH but obviously fresh air exchange lowers RH so how do we combat that? We have a very carefully designed fruiting chamber the SGFC.
Quote:
bodhisatta said: Fruiting Chamber A SGFC has 1/4" holes spaces 2 inches apart in a grid patten on all six sides. 4-6 inches of moist perlite. No attachments made to it with any extra things like humidifiers. Optimally the SGFC should be in the middle of a room. No fans should be run in the room with the SGFC, but a cracked window is OK. A humidifier in your house can help to raise the ambient RH but don't put it near your SGFC put it in the other corner of the room if you do decide to run a humidifier at all. The SGFC IMO should have at least 6-12 inches of room from any wall on all 6 sides. This includes finding some sort of raisers to elevate the SGFC off of the surface it's on. This is what can happen if you make your SGFC the right way. Here's what will happen if you do it the wrong way. You'll likely rage quit.
Misting and Fanning. This is a source of much grief and 100's of posts a week here. Misting and fanning is not at all complicated as it needs to be. In general you'll mist your cakes until they glisten(yes they can even with the verm on them) and then fan right after the mist. You can mist your cakes directly and you should. When you notice the cake is no longer glistening you can mist it again and then fan. This occurs on average of 3-5 times a day. Don't worry about sleeping or being gone 12 hours. Just do it when you're around and don't forget about it is all. Fanning is not FAE it's only purpose is to relive the high RH air so that the cakes can get a kickstart on evaporation.
FAE This is a phenomenon (Fresh air exchange) in a properly built SGFC this is constantly happening. The perlite is naturally cooler than the surrounding air this moves molecules closer to eachother as the lose kinetic energy. This creates low pressure which pulls air up through the bottom holes. As the air moves through the perlite it picks up humidity and keeps the chamber at or above 90%RH. This occurs naturally without the fanning and is why we like to have no fans in the room and is also why fanning after misting is not a replacement for FAE.

You would need to fan several times per hour.

RogerRabbit said: You should never run a fan near a shotgun terrarium. When I designed the shotgun, I was working 12 hour days, 7 days per week and needed something that could go for 14 hours each day while I was gone and take care of itself. If you set up a fan or otherwise try to 'automate' the system which is designed to be self sufficient, you'll dry out your substrates and ruin them. Follow the tek to the letter and you'll be fine while gone to work. That's the purpose of a shotgun terrarium. It's as close to maintenance free as you can get. Put your 6500K lights on a 12/12 timer and mist mornings and evenings. RR

RogerRabbit said: The original pf tek was lucky to produce 3 grams per cake. Today, we use the same recipe, but get up to 10 dry grams per cake. The difference is ten years of study on pinning triggers, proper fresh air exchange, terrarium design, lighting, and substrate moisture maintenance.
Follow the advice you're getting now and forget the ten year old stuff. RR
I suggest forgetting trying to reinvent the wheel in your own way.

The Sirens Call of automation drove me to waste money, time, and energy on gadgets, electric devices, and other materials.
Primarily, what a good FC actually means. I have come to understand that a good FC means proper FAE and RH.
It took several really complex, yet poor, setups to realize the simplicity of monotubs and SGFC's is where it's at.

Basically, no we already have done the Research and Development. The SGFC is cheap, and effective. Take it or leave it, you can do your own R&D but the SGFC will work better and cost the same.

I cant think of too many places in the whole world other than Greenland and Antarctica that perlite would be that hard to get.

Sorry to wake up an old thread, but this guy is doing almost exactly what I suggested in my original post and it works for him (and probably for his customers). He just pours a few inches of water on the bottom of his spawn bag, which acts as his fruiting chamber, and that's it. Looks like he reaches good humidity that way. No perlite required. Off topic: I know that people on Shroomery.org don't like grow kits. That is not my point. My point is that the method that I suggested in my OP actually works for somebody, namely the Dutch guy from the video above. Let's imagine that he is using standard PF tek cakes instead of a kit with that spawn bag - his fruiting chamber would be the same for both. And it seems to work.

and mushrooms grow out of trash bags and toilets too, but it's not a method you see people suggesting.

getting less for more isn't most people's idea of a smart use of time and money
