ATL#7 - yeast contamination question
    #24255076 - 04/18/17 06:31 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

I started six jars a couple weeks ago and wound up with a yeast contamination in one of them.  White spots and awful smell...yuck.

I didn't toss it immediately because I didn't need the jar or the space.  It's been sitting there since 4/5 and the myc is fighting back...stones are forming!

I've actually got better stone growth in that jar than in any of the other five.  My guess is the fungus knows it's in trouble so it's doing it's self preservation thing and trying to ride it out like it would in other unfavorable conditions.  Could be wrong, but it makes sense to me.

Anyway, I know contams are bad.  And I know that I wouldn't want to spawn this jar to bulk and fruit it...or even open it anywhere near my lab area.

But if all I want are the stones...can I just let it run it's course and harvest them in spite of the yeast issue?

I don't recall which trusted source I got mine from, but this was spores --> agar --> LC --> grain.  It was clean all the way through.  Pretty sure it happened during the inoculation or when I was fixing my GE filter.

None of my plates or jars have yeast problems.  I'm confident that I caused the contamination and that it's not a sourcing issue.

Yeast IME most often hops in from human hands or something.

Bump.

Original question:

But if all I want are the stones...can I just let it run it's course and harvest them in spite of the yeast issue?

Interesting.  Good to know.  Any reason why?

Because yeast and bacteria die in an environment with no water, just like how heating food can kill bacteria or yeast. Eating random active yeasts can be harmful for your health.
