Why does Roger Rabbit cover spawn and manure with foil? He does not say when to take it off> Help

Thought so, come on I have a legit question. In his videos he says nothing about removing the foil or how long to leave it on. I have been birthing in a clear tub. RR uses black smaller tubs for birthing. I am comparing methods. - Thought this board was to help each other... Just seeking clarification PLEASE!

Manure and spawn are covered with foiled to create colonization conditions of the bulk substrate materials. This stage of the mushroom growing life cycle is called "Spawn Run".
Once the mycelium has fully colonized the bulk substrate materials is generally when the substrate goes into the next stage of the mushroom growing life cycle called "fruiting".

It may be worth knowing that RR has never grown using a monotub. If you want to grow bulk I suggest taking advantage of the good teks on here

Thanks for the reply bodisatta, I was not clear. I was not referring to monotub, RR uses a shallow dark plastic tub for his spawn run and fruiting. It is a black one and he covers it with tinfoil. My question is why? And for how long.

He uses it to create a specific atmosphere in there, and keeps games inside for the myc to use. Takes it off when it's time to fruit, and the colony is done eating through the grains

I'm guessing you are not going to be growing in trays. If you are i suggest you dont and look up tub growing methods

It'll keep the sub from drying out during the spawn run too during the time its colonizing, if you didn't have a lid on it it would lose a lot of moisture and would need misting maintenance.
He uses a greenhouse so after its colonized it goes in there.
For us growing tubs, we have a lid and/or people cover the holes up with tape.
Now a days I introduce fruiting conditions right after spawning my tubs, so they are getting fresh air but it is limited by polyfill or micropore tape at a good balance so I don't have to mist.

Yea me too. Unless you have a greenhouse its easier to run tubs at home. You can do trays inside of tubs too like in this photo from last fall
