Crushed grain: how best to use it?
    #24256167 - 04/19/17 04:21 AM (7 years, 8 months ago)

So, I found a great price on bags of mixed grain. I got one, drove it home .... and, it's crushed. Not flour fine, but small pieces. Much like that stuff you mix with water and feed to chickens, in texture.

It doesn't look like I could simply soak it and jar it up as per usual, as it's not individual grains. Should I try mixing it with vermiculite to make some sort of cake (though verm is very pricy here), just add water by weight and deal with the sticky mess, use it as a supplement in sterilised bags, or feed it to the neighbours chooks and write it off as 20kg of learning experience for 'why one should check suspiciously cheap goods before parting with money'?

If anyone has experience with it, I'd appreciate any advice ^_^
I'm currently headed mostly in the 'lots of oyster mushrooms and pioppino' direction, and use mostly agar> grain or agar >grainLC>grain and coir bags if that's relevant
What to do with crushed grain?
You may choose only one

if you got that much of it you might as well try to do something with it. i can't say what your best plan of action would be but maybe if you make up a few test jars using standard methods and then see how they turn out you will get a better idea and see what modifications might need to be made. and it could be helpful if you can separate the powdery portions of it from the chunkier portions. i don't know about pioppino but oyster mycelium is pretty aggressive and doesn't seem to have much problem consuming whatever it's given.

If you're looking to grow edibles your in the wrong spot this is all psychedelic. There's gourmet section for what you are interested in

Cracked grains will work for in vitro bottles but not as spawn

Ahh, thank you- I keep forgetting cultivation is mostly for psychoactive mushies ^_^

Good to know, I've not had the chance to try bottles, Thanks Bodhisatta.

Good point Panarchist, I hadn't thought to try sift out the big bits- but that'll definitely make it easier to use this up appropriately. I've certainly got enough to experiment with. Thank you

I really appreciate the advice, guys. It's lovely to be on a forum where people know what they're doing and tolerate my n00b questions
