by vent i'm assuming you mean put the lid on without the weight and let it vent 10 minutes to ensure proper pressurization?

I do it regardless of what i'm PCing, it keeps the temperatures stable

Honestly, a pc is probably the thing that keeps me away from mycology.

Those things freak me out.

Always vent your pc no matter what you are cooking, from ribs to bird seed

I'm sure they can hold a lot of pressure before violently failing.  But I worry about water running dry and something breaking, clogging the vents.

Not really a fan of machinery here.  Even grow equipment freaks me out.  LED's seem safer but even the normal things in my house fail.  Got a leaking pipe right now, next to an electrical outlet.  Then there is an electric line that runs right next to my shower drain pipes....that leak when I take a bathe.

Gonna be fucked

Of course you still vent. Read the manual.

I have never vented my pasty plates because I didn't even know that was a thing until a couple weeks ago. and I've never ran into any problems. but now I'm pouring a few petris and wondering if it even makes a difference for agar

You probably never had any problems because pastys only have like 1/4" of medium in each one, tops. Now that you
are about to pc a whole bottle of medium, you need to vent. You need to vent pastys too, you've just been lucky.

the fact that they were sealed hot probably helps. I'm glad I finally learned about venting because I had no idea where my bacteria problems were coming from

My understanding has always been that you need to vent your pc to get all the air out. If you have a combinatiin of air and steam, it may warp your PC or create pockets that dont get sterilized

I've never heard of it warping your pc that way but definitely not thorough sterilization

Look up partial pressure of gases. It's a chemistry concept which basically details how 2 gases, in the same vessel under
pressure, will each account for a portion of the total pressure of the vessel.

Basically, so if you are pcing at 15psi, and you didn't vent, then maybe only 9psi is steam pressure, while the
rest is air pressure. You want all 15psi to be steam pressure.

i get the concept, but does it really warp your pc?

This is incorrect.  The purpose of the "vent" is to ensure all the substrate materials being sterilized reach boiling point at their internal core before wanting to begin to build pressure to 15 psi, or beyond.

That makes sure everything in the PC is the exact same temperature, and that everything in the PC increases in temperature at the exact same rate, thus ensuring even sterilization.

The larger the substrate materials being sterilized,  the longer you are going to want to vent your PC for.  The pressure cooker won't warp either.
