20 PF jars, different colonization speeds, when to dunk/fruit?
    #24250970 - 04/17/17 07:06 AM (7 years, 8 months ago)

Hi yall

First grow here.  I inoculated 20 1/2 pint jars a while back.  so far so good, no contam I don't think.

However, as probably expected, there is a decent amount of variation in colonization speed.

When a jar looks fully colonized I've been writing a date on the jar for 7 days later, to allow consolidation.  These dates are my "dunk dates".

The breakdown of "dunk dates" looks like this:

4/17 (today): 9 jars
4/18: 2 jars
4/19: 1 jar
4/20: 2 jars
4/21: 2 jars
4/23: 2 jars
4/24: 1 jar
and 1 jar is lagging behind (only took up in 1 of the 4 inoculation holes)

I'm trying to figure out if I should delay dunking a few days to birth a bunch all at once.  Is there a risk to adding extra consolidation time?

Also, in 2 or 3 of the 4/17 jars, there is some pinning action going on (getting excited!!!)

What do you guys think?

Your cakes are all separate entities.

Treat each one as an individual. Birth/dunk and roll when they need it.

Alright, thanks! I ended up dunking 11 cakes, as one of the 4/18 cakes exhibited some decently large pins.

One question I have:

Do you guys ever experience mycelium growing up through the dry verm barrier layer? I had a few cakes that looked like this was occurring.  Was kind of worried it may have been cobweb or something, but I figure the dry verm just soaked up some moisture and some of the mycelium were able to poke through a tiny bit.

I unfortunately don't have picks of said fuzzies but the cakes were otherwise thoroughly colonized and looked good after rinsing and removing the verm layer

Bonus pic: here's the cake that I planned on dunking tomorrow but did a day early due to this pin!  Let me know if that was dumb to do
