Are my oyster mushroom pinheads looking fine?
    #24250449 - 04/16/17 11:08 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

Hello everyone, this is my first time growing oyster mushrooms. I am using cardboard and household waste as substrate. The pinheads have been growing since a week now but no fruiting bodies formed yet. Can anybody please tell me if the pinheads are looking alright and when should i expect them to fruit?

Are they getting enough air? Oysters need a lot of fresh air.

Are those blue?

I read somewhere on these forums that trimming down the amount of pinheads will form blue oysters better. More nutrition per mushroom that way.

I have no experience with blues minus a fully colonized jar I have.

The cake is in a 8 gallon tote with perlite and a cool mist humifier. the tote has 32 holes on 4 sides. I also fan it atleast twice per day. Is fanning twice per day enough? Thank you for your help!

Try leaving the lid cracked or partially off. Also, a full spec shotgun has holes on all six sides and is raised up off the surface it's resting on so air can flow through the holes on the bottom.

freespeech is right.  You need holes drilled through the lid, and the bottom of your tote, and for the tote to be elevated in a way that air can circulate through the bottom of the fruiting chamber, and evaporate the moisture from the perlite.  You are cutting down the performance of the fruiting chamber by not having the holes drilled through the bottom, and top.  Also, the standard-average size of a shotgun fruiting chamber is 104 quart (26 gallon).

I would try posting this Here in the gourmet and medicinal mushrooms thread.

But yeah they look like they need more air. Mine looked like that when I tried an experiment in a "shoe box" which didnt have enough air.

Once I took off the lid and let ALOT of air in new pins popped that looks like this

Then this

Then this

Sorry for all the pics.

Also, that cake would get better surface conditions if you cut that foil to about the circumfrance of the cake.
