No fruit Hericium Erinaceus (Lion's Mane)
    #24250156 - 04/16/17 08:54 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

Hi All,

Let me just first say: I am new to the site but have really appreciated all the useful discussions of users from this forum. I have a question that I couldn't find a solution for online with Lion's mane mushrooms. Here it is...

I started lions mane (HE) in several approaches but have not reliably produced fruit. Any tips on why this might be happening?

Here are some details.
The first was on brown rice using the standard brown rice tek (1 volume rice 1.5 volume water). The results are pictured here. The jar is dated 3/14 and there are some fruit forming in the jar now. As expected. I was going to spawn woodchip substrate with this, but had enough spawn using WBS.

The second approach I tried was to spawn directly on woodchips. I used a recipe posted by user Aleon, except I replaced sawdust with woodchips that a friend gave me. This recipe was mainly woodchip with some wheat bran and gypsum. The jar became fully colonized with mycelium (approx 2 weeks), but then did not produce fruit. To fruit I removed the lid from the jar and placed it in a plastic tub with a few quarter inch holes. I misted with water 2-6 times a day and fanned with the lid whenever I opened the top. The room temperature was around 75 degrees F (at least). After a week in this fruiting environment I put the lid back on the jar and moved it to my closet, where it is a bit cooler 70-73 F. I thought maybe it was a bit warm in the fruiting chamber.

The last approach was to use Pennington classic wild bird seed (WBS) and spawn on woodchips. The WBS colonized in a week and after a week and a half I spread a pint in 1.25kg of woodchip substrate. I have two woodchip bags (one pictured), where the woodchip substrate is pretty well colonized, but no fruit have formed. From reading here and online my understanding was that lions mane fruits very quickly before the substrate is visibly colonized sometimes. I am confused because mine appears to be colonizing heavily but not fruiting. Another potentially unhelpful photo below.

Some further notes; I am sterilizing all substrates and using a make-shift glove box to spread the spawn in the woodchip substrate.
