Need help! Rye grains soaked too long??
    #24249957 - 04/16/17 07:46 PM (7 years, 8 months ago)

I had a complete brain fart and I think I accidentally let three quart jars of rye grains soak for two nights instead of one. I heard this is bad, as it can ferment. And indeed there was a slight fizz when I opened each jar to start boiling the grains, but how bad is this? Could I still use the grains as spawn? I can't start over because it's all the rye I have on hand and I need grain jars asap as I have another quart jar that has been fully colonized for quite some time now and needs to be used soon I assume in g2g!

I don't know If it's still viable, but if not you can use Wild bird seed, rye grass seed, or popcorn. rye grass seed (or any grass seed without fungicide) seems to me to be the easiest, and fastest since it doesnt need a long soak like others, I've done. Wild bird seed wasnt so much hard as it was time consuming. If you look into it and it's now not viable I'd recommend using untreated grass seed if you have it laying around.

Whole oats don't even need a rinse, or a soak

I'm a noob but here is my $.02. Take it for what it's worth.

I did the same thing with an entire 8 cups dry rye berries. Enough to fill 9 quart jars about 3/4 full. The timing just didn't work out for me to get them boiled and into jars and they ended up sitting for just over 2 days. Although I did change the water once in between and again before boiling. Yes they were fermenting and bubbling. AND many of them had actually sprouted. I went ahead and processed as usual.

Others may have different experiences but I think they turned out usable, at least for me. I used them for PE G2G and noc'd a few from Azurescens LC.

So far I think things have worked out ok. May be a fluke. I don't know. Let the pros weigh in.

PE G2G 4/3

Azurescens noc'd 4/3

Alright. I figure I'd might as well go ahead and try to recover this batch but will also look into WBS in the future. Thank you everyone!
