Jiffy mix is vermiculite and peat moss. I have only done 50/50 and it worked allright not super but then again i have only cased about 3 times.

As I understand it, Jiffy Mix is already a mixture of vermiculite and peat moss. It should not be necessary to add more to the Jiffy Mix. I recommend a 1:3 mix of vermiculite and peat moss with some gypsum added as an aggregate and garden lime added until the pH is 7. Due to the results I have had in the past, I always recommend pasteurizing instead of sterilizing, but either way, just make sure to keep your air well circulated.
The layer of vermiculite on the bottom is not vital, but if you are not using a terrarium for humidity, it does help to retain more moisture.

When you say that you mixed the colonized cake in your casing, what exactly do you mean? Colonized cakes should be crumbles into an even layer and then covered with the casing mix, not mixed together with it.

SpaceFarmer, what do you mean by gypsum? I know gypsum is a board similar to drywall but is made of a type of concrete. Is this what you mean? If not where do you get it and how much do you use? Sorry for not going along with the topic, I'm just intrested in a few new methods.

Instead of a bottom layer of vermiculite, use a moist layer of perlite. This will help maintain dampness and humidity. You don't have to mist as often or as heavily with the perlite in the bottom.
