Got 6 0ne lb bags of rye berries that r colonizing now.after reading more I am going to start working with agar. My question is,when I go to spawn to my bulk substrate can i take a grain or 2 to my sab and scrape some mycelium off onto the agar. Then grow out and transfer from their??? Will it work or will the plate most likely be over ram with contamination

Just drop one grain onto a plate in your SAB. This is actually common practice so your heads in the right place.
You can also spawn your grains like normal and then take a clone from your best shrooms once they have fruited..

Thanks. I tried searching. This is my first go with a bulk grow. So was trying to think of a way to have some mycelium growing just incase my tub goes to shit, and not have to buy another syringe.
If I just drop one grain on the plate and it starts colonizing the agar , do I need to go back and remove the grain ? It won't start to decompose? Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated

hopefully you will have prepared multiple agar plates/containers for this reason ! i'd leave the grain and just transfer a clean section of mycelium to another plate, or 3 plates. If/when you get good growth just transfer it to more grain after.

Thank u for the advice. Is their some kind of problems that could arise from me just dropping a rye berry covered in mycelium on the plate. Or is the safer bet is to scrape some off? Just wondering cause I think it would b faster for me to drop one on the plate and close plate. Il have enough plates to b able to do both so I guess I can just learn that part on my own. Thanks again guys.

Just drop her on there. That's all. And clone a bit of tissue from your favorite fruit by dropping a piece from inside the stem on there.

yea since you have no spores left I'd take 3 separate plates with the grain and more tissue samples after fruiting.

The grain will not decompose or rot it's being consumed by mycelium. If your grain spawn is clean and your sterile procedure is good you technically wouldn't even have to transfer away from contaminates. Just transfer growth that looks good to you to get a better preforming culture. I actually posted a video not to long ago of the cloning process I'll link it here when I get home.

Good info. So I can spawn a tub, grab a stray grain from a jar, and keep that strain going forever by doing this? Awesome.

You could grab a colonized grain that fell on your floor and put it on a dish. Then take a transfer after 2-3 days to a new plate and there you go
