I'm not sure how mycelium really works, but would something like this work to keep everything well hydrated in a mono tub type grow? Or would the liquid not transfer from the bottom to the top?

Pardon the elite Paint skills, it just popped into my head and I threw it together to see if you guys thought it might be effective. I didn't see anything like this in a search, but I may not have searched the right terms.

 Fair enough.

Out of curiosity, would it not work because the mycelium would not transport the water up, because it would lead to contamination, or both? And/or something I haven't thought of?

Yea I wouldn't do that.  You'll end up with some mangled looking tubs that you'll want to throw away.

I like the idea of providing a reservoir of water for the sub to draw from.  I don't know how that would work in practice because I suspect that the water may become bacterial and the sub/mycelium may just reject the contaminated water rather than absorb it.  It could be interesting to try, but if it requires such a complex contraption it doesn't seem worthwhile.

I built this in 2011. It did not work. It actually sunk.

First try at LC.

Color changed drastically from regular pasty plate agar color. However I've never used non dyed agar until now, so maybe the color change is normal.

Used pasty plate recipe. For one set of plates, into this whole jar. Added a little more honey but no other significant changes.

So I have a super mini mono going right now.

I like how the no liner kind of makes it self watering. Like as evaporation occurs we get condensation, that in turn runs back down the side some and waters the sub along the edges returning SOME of the water lost during evaporations. Hopefully fooling the substrate into thinking that it is "getting watered/rained on". I seen pasty talk about a theory that a sub will premature abort pins if it detects that there will not be enough water to sustain them all. Well theoretically, the water running back down to the substrate, should act like bottom watering, which pasty suggested could help by tricking the culture into thinking it has a regular supply of water and HOPEFULLY make it not premature abort pins.

Wait so you used the pasty plate recipe? Agar included?

Are you doing the pasty EZ lc where he squirts sterile water on a culture and waits for
nutes to leach into the water and growth or are you dropping a wedge in the lc broth?

I'm confused:lol: That looks like agar to me

If I'm not mistaken I was told to add a clean wedge to this, let it grow some, then add sterile water and swirl.

Am I mistaken??

Trying to wrap my head around the super easy LC.

I still need agar in my LC water? But not enough to make it hard, just to give it some thicker texture than just water?

Anyone got a simple potato flake/honey or Karo recipe?

You make agar and put it in a pint jar with a grain lid. Sterilize.

Then transfer a wedge. Do this in a SAB. Let it grow out a bit to be sure the colony is clean and healthy.

Then add sterile water. Let it colonize. When done pour the colonized water to inoculate.

The super easy part is it works without the need for a ship or whatman filters or syringes.

I guess not LC yet. But rather a very large agar puck in a quart jar that will soon be LC...

Ok ya that's pasty EZ lc. You're good I just thought when you said lc you meant a regular
lc.

more than I would like to admit. I have been fighting a battle with bacteria on my Costa Rica culture, currently only one I got usable other on the way. It seems to have bacteria that hides in the mycelium, really clear looking and I have just figured this out. SO yea I got questionable jars.

In the next couple days I will be spawning 3 pint cakes to 3 QT of CVG in a tub that I will do with no liner as well. Seems like I started getting side and bottom pins even with liners.

The correlation that I have drawn, in my case, is this damn bacteria that has been hiding in my culture. It make that thin, clear~ish skin over the agar. I didn't even realize I had it. What seems to happen is the bacteria likes to grow around the surface of my substrate, it gives me a 1st flush of mutated and fucked up shrooms, possibly in part due to, to much water in substrate, which also allows that bacteria to thrive. I get Healthy pins on side and some times bottom. I hope that getting a clean culture and no bacteria helps this. I hope a good clean culture will help fight side pins, cause I didn't used to get them.

Anyone knows anything about Ez felts? How can I recognize it on Ebay? I typed 'ez felt' and got a bunch of entries but I don't know what's the thickness I should be looking for or the brand.
