Grafting vs. Laboratory ParaFilm? * 1
    #24233472 - 04/10/17 08:57 PM (6 years, 10 months ago)

Howdy all!

I'm curious to hear from those that have experimented with grafting ParaFilm as well as laboratory ParaFilm..  From my brief research, I cannot seem to find any difference between the two.  The obvious advantage of price difference leans me toward the grafting but, I'd love to hear your opinions before I purchase a roll.

Let me know what you think!

-Cheers!

I have used both and prefer parafilm grafting tape for 100mm petri dishes. It's so much cheaper i don't worry about burning through it and i can use it for cacti. Eventually i will get a full 4" parafilm lab roll because it is superior and seals tighter. Parafilm lab stretches way more than their grafting and it grips so much better to itself. Sometimes the grafting tape will tear or not completely attach so you have to use a bit more.

Grafting: better functionality, cheaper

Lab: superior quality, adheres to glass and plastic very well

Have you guys tried medical tape? I use it all the time on my petris and haven't really had any problems. Can you guys think of any cons?

I have used Duct tape and even electric tape for them with no problems.

I vote for the glad cling wrap, the one with a sticky side.
Tons of it for $4

Parafilm rolls last forever so its actually not expensive as it seems when you go to buy a roll.

I've used 1" sections of plastic wrap rolls as well and it works fantastic.

I actually just prefer saran wrapping my dishes. I can afford some parafilm but I hate cutting strips and peeling backs especially when doing a few sleeves in a day

Yea man its a PITA especially if you wear gloves
I keep a roll of parafilm but I tend to use it more for plated going into cold storage and slants + what not.

I use cling wrap all the time!

I do 20-40 plates per month and use parafilm exclusively.  I never cut it into strips either.  Just rip 2-3 inch strips off the roll and carry on.

Parafilm lasts a long time too, so to me it's worth the expense, because (again for me) it's a snap, and a cinch to use.

What did you use to cut the roll?

I don't know what other people use but I use a very sharp kitchen knife, it just saws right thru.

Whatever you use you just want a smooth edge, and don't crush the tube. If you end up with jagged pieces it will get hung up when you unroll it
