In the heat of summer it is almost impossible to overwater trichos that are in the ground in my climate (hot desert). Most problems occur in the cooler months when growth has slowed down or stopped. A couple of my pachanois split badly but were ok last winter when it was unusually rainy. I had a couple of bridgesiis that got weeping black spots this fall when the weather started to cool but I was still watering heavily on the summer schedule. As their growth slows they are much more susceptible to rot. When they are in full growth mode they are much more forgiving to overwatering.

That's good news on the bridgesii growing in Florida. I have several hundred cuttings going in the ground soon and many thousands seedlings soon to follow. Finally bought some property I can let them grow freely.

I water pretty much everyday during summer. I use smart pots though so root rot isn't as much of a concern. Fabric pots allow much more air transfer than plastic or even terra cotta. I use a very heavy, rich soil also. Even my bridges love the damp conditions. My cactus that grows the most each year is a bridge. I get almost 4' of new growth from a single bridge in a #2 smart pot, which isn't even 2 gallons in volume.
Root rot isn't just from too much water. It also has to do with not enough air transfer from the soil, leading to anaerobic conditions.

For anyone looking for this guide, it’s now located here. Maybe a mod can update the link on the pinned page. I hope it’s still helping new growers.
