I don't know if it's Phish, or the Grateful dead. They are both my favorite.

It's really hard for me to choose one. The Grateful Dead, with all the history and magic that happened during their time, or Phish, who are still making fresh, new music that I love too. I just don't know.

Yes, you should check out Phish. They're the greatest. Take a healthy(or unhealthy) dose of your favorite mind altering substance, listen, and enjoy.

I agree, but for the uninitiated, it might help open their mind to the music. Besides, all music sounds better to me when I'm altered.

My music style is pretty weird. I grew up on 80's metal (not like poisen or cinderella) but like Metallica and Pantera type bands. But then for the next few weeks i'd listen to nothing but Pink Floyd (which is my favorite band in that genre). I've seen both in concert.

Mine would be Pearl Jam, with Tool as a second favorite. The live shows Pearl Jam puts on are just spectacular, although I'm sure the Deadheads on here know all about those types of things.....

I have alot of changes in what is my favourite. I think the band that I was the greatest fan for ever was Millencolin. I havent really listened to them for some years now though, but I was a millencolin fan like no other, I would smash my room up listening to them. I guess you could say my favourite band is Sublime, but thats what I think now, tomorrow I might say something else

hmmm this thread seems to have turned into an argument of whether phish or the dead is better...
my answer: phish
sorry bro but metallica sucks ass, like, big time sucks ass
i dont have a favorite band cause I dont really listen to "bands" im into hip hop and dance music (house, dnb, electro, etc)
the roots are cool, they are a hip hop group who's gimmick is they are all acoustic (drumset and beatbox instead of turntables, live bass etc.)
me im a turntable junkie so i havent ever gotten into the roots that much, altho they are talented
so my answer to the question "what is my favorite band?"...
i dont know

ehhh yea sorry, if u like them (metallica) thats coo but i usually use them as the perfect example of what i dont like in a band
umm dance music, how can i explain?... music made to dance to, hehe
like, music you would hear at a dance club or a rave (dnb = drum n bass)
or anything made with turntables and/or a synthesiser, fx processor, a drum machine, etc as opposed to guitars, bass and drumset.
granted a lot of music made within this genre really sucks but there are plenty of gems
for me its gotta have that funk, somethin that grabs your entire body and makes it move, as opposed to just makin you wanna extend your index and pinky fingers in the air and headbang till ur dizzy or nauseous or at the very least, youve got a pounding headache.
but all the same, like u said, to each their own

Guns N roses - use your illusion was pretty much the first time I really got into music. I was in like 3rd grade or some shit. I got into phish around '94 but wasn't crazy about them until I saw them live. That first show though.. totally owned my ass. I instantly became obsessed with music and guitar. They destroyed my previous idea of how music is played and showed me something I had never seen before. I have yet to see a band that can move me the way Phish does.

I would like to go to a Phish concert someday, I know absolutly no songs from them but if the vibe is like I think it is i'd enjoy it. I liked Pink Floyd but when I saw them in concert it sorta sealed the deal. The laser light show was pretty cool.

David Grisman and Jerry Garcia are pretty fabulous together. I would have to say Morphine or Pink Floyd, though.

I like too many bands to have a favorite, at least right now... Invitirio- how is metallica your favorite band after you used shrooms, or even pot? I mean its so hard, angry, aggressive, negative I dont like to listen to it while im on any drugs. When i listen to things like that on weed even i start getting really excited and energetic, but not in a positive way. I cant imagine listening to them on psycadelics... do you listen to metal while you shroom?

INNVERTIGO
It's not the only band I listen to. I Listen to tons of different music. With that said I enjoy "aggressive" music and what is negative about it? Because it's fast? There are a lot of whiney new age bands out there (many were named in this thread) that sing about nothing but how pathetic life is and we should just give up.

I'm an enhancement smoker. If I like something sober I like it even better stoned. I do get pretty excited and energetic but that in itself doesn't make it negative and I never get into any problems because of that aggression and energy. I'm amazed that there's people out there that lose control just because they listen to something they "perceive" as negative.

Sure I listen to everything while shrooming, you don't? I listen to everything from Pink Floyd to whatever happens to be playing on the radio, or no music at all.

My all-time favorite band, since 1979, is Rush. I don't think I've ever gone a month without listening to their music since junior high school, and I'm 37 now. Their music just never grows old to me.

Well Millencolin have a really catchy energetic sound, and I love the way the vocalist sings, his voice is authentic, plus I could relate to their lyrics alot. When I went to my room I saw my collection and realized I had forgotten to say that Exploited is my favourite band!!! Close seconds: The Misfits Nirvana Anti Flag Sublime The Doors Jimi Hendrix The Grateful Dead No not phish... yet... I have yet to hear some more from them Less Than Jake Millencolin... still fucking good Blink 182 and Box Car Racer Astral Projection Infected Mushroom

Have any of you noticed how 80's is back? There's alot of 80's music playing on the radio and alot of new bands are playing music inspired by that 80's sound... I think thats pretty cool.

I agree invertigo. Alot of bands are whiney and negative. and metallica is definatly not positive. most of their lyrics are negative. i should know i have pretty much Kill em All through black album (or was and justice for all later?) memorized... and can play most of the songs on guitar. take the quote in your sig for example. another example seek and destroy (prob my fav metallica song) one. especially fade to black. im defintaly staying away from that shit while tripping.

That's cool, I wouldn't listen to them then. I find them to be quite an upper for me and I have no problem controling my emotions while i'm tripping while listening to them. Your negative quite possibly could be my positive, for each his own. Quote:

Big deal, are you influenced so easily as to succomb to a lyric in a song? that's pretty weak. Again, for each his own. I find it described my teenage angst I had when I was a teenager quite nicely, especially Fade To Black. Quote:

Picking favorites is impossible for me, Pink Floyd is definitely up there though
There are so many amazing bands out there though, Floyd just has so much great music out including live bootlegs and concert DVD's.
Many of my other "favorite" bands only ever put out one obscure album though sadly.
Also not one person here said Yes, they put out a ton of great stuff and really raised the musical bar and helped usher so much other amazing prog rock.
Here is my favorite Yes song:
Yes - Siberian Khatru
Just listen to that experimental funky guitar and crazy keys rythm, interesting lyrics and style too. Its just all around good stuff.

You ever listen to Astra? I have seen their sound described as Sabbath meets Floyd and I feel its pretty accurate.
Masters Of Reality is another interesting group actually named after the Sabbath album.

Eleven year old thread resurrected by a newbie necromancer.
What to do what to do. Clash? B-52s? Gentle Giant? Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry? Genesis/Peter Gabriel?
I'm gonna go with Gabriel with Genesis and Gabriel solo through Security. The Clash

Masters Of Reality is another interesting group actually named after the Sabbath album.

Astra only has two albums out I think but they both are pretty damns solid, their first one "The Weirding" is my favorite.
Here is the self titled track and my favorite from that album:
Astra - The Weirding
It just has such a great balance of mellow an heavy elements, great lyrics and message as well as musicianship. A lot of epic long tracks too.
Here is one of my favorite Masters Of Reality Tracks:
Masters Of Reality "John Brown" live
Never heard the live version but it sounds pretty great, has an extended intro that is not in the studio version. Love the guitar throughout

Ima be pleb af but whatever
As far as contemporary goes MGMT has my vote.
Floyd vs dead is basically a deathmatch.
Then there's Jimi, clapton, and my entire rap collection

Oh but the Beatles suck. I give em credit for being progressive but they are far from the best. Very experimental though so props to that.

^^agreed. I guess I'll add mine in here. If I had to absolutely choose one, it would have to be phish. But I'm not one to choose just one. Tends to fluctuate depending on my mood/headspace. My top four are phish, grateful dead, stone temple pilots & alice in chains.

I realy love the band Television. They were responsible for getting the manager of CBGBs to agree to let them play in his bar in the Bowery in New York City. If not for them, Punk bands would have never had their own original venue and home to play gigs at like they did back in the early 70s in the USA. One of the guitar players once said there were two band wagons in his day: The Beatles vs Rolling Stones, and he was in the Rolling Stones. He was also personally thought guitar by Jimi Hendrix, and at the time had a code name for Jimi as to not attract attention that Jimi was teaching him. He ended up making an album dedicated to Jimi with the code name as the album title. I was able to exchange emails with him. I found out that my cousin cooked him some of the best pizza he had ever eat in New York City.
