MycoFlora said: You can put away the popcorn guys, there's not going to be a show. All I can say is everything this guy has said is categorically untrue. This guy has never had an 'operation', I have never received grant money lol, and I certainly never stole anything. I should point out that this 'guy' is my brother. Insert your typical sibling fall out story and that should fill in the gaps. He has done this about once a month for a year straight. I could set my watch by it. He has harassed me on several social media accounts, phone calls, texts, etc., then sends a barrage of apology texts asking for forgiveness. He has even tried to call code enforcement on me so many times now they are going to take him to court for filing false claims/harassment. He blew up my business page with claims that my mushrooms make people's hair fall out and now apparently I stole his non existent business. lol It is something new every month. He has very severe emotional and drug abuse issues, which is why this whole thing came about in the first place.
This forum is about the cultivation of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, not a soap box for angry sibling diatribes. I'd suggest you post something about gourmet mushrooms, which you can't because you don't grow them, or contact the Jerry Springer show. I'm sure they would love to have you.
Regardless of the conversation that ensues I'm not going to derail the forum any further. PM me if you have questions, which I will happily answer. Please, don't feed the trolls, and keep on shroomin'.
Just look at who has been here longer. End of story. Literally over half of the equipment you own was bought by me and sold or given to you. Sorry to bust ya out. Over half of the cultures you use were sourced here from the shroomery by ME. Cultures you probably still sell in stores...
But yes, back to mush cultQuote:

MycoFlora said: Well, it depends on the species, type of sub, how many flushes, sterilizer capacity, inc. room capacity, cooler capacity, etc... but going off of my current setup I use 6.5 lb blocks for oysters. each shelf can hold approximately 70 blocks and I have room for 14 shelves plus some end cap shelves that hold 40 blocks, for a total of roughly 1,000 blocks. So assuming you did one flush only to keep rotations tight and if each block yields 20-30% that's anywhere from 1,200-1,900lbs completely maxed out. But I'm going for multiple flushes since I have way more fruiting room than I do incubation room. there are about 100 other considerations you would need to take into account growing that much fungus, but it's nice to know your limitations!
i think you're forgetting that you need 2-3 weeks of production in the grow room since you need one batch pinning while another one is almost ready to harvest. if you want the same production every week, that is a commonly over looked.
Something MycoFlora doesn't know about because again, he is following someone else's SOP's.

Man it feels great to be back at it:)
I really despise packaged fungi.
And especially stories like these...
Surely would be some sour disappointment if the words spoken are true.
Best of luck to u.

awesome man! I can't wait to get things going here, getting lots of positive support from my family. Haven't poured concrete yet, waiting to clear out all of the fallen trees and remove the stumps, shouldn't be too much longer. Still doing around 75lbs a week?

I have a distaste for packing as well. A lot of plastic waste that ends up in a landfill. But unfortunately when you do this for a living, not just for fun, it's a necessary evil.
liloldme More like 50/week right now. Just got everything straightened out with my market and food hub so 75-100lbs will kick in this month. Just doubled my production....hereee we go!
And yes definitely post pics/ keep us updated. I'd like this thread to be a place for people to post about their farms and commercial set ups, so post away!

Here is my newbie question.
Earlier you were pasteurizing mushroom substrate with hydrated lime and oxyclean. Now you are sterilizing with heat. Is it due to the substrate used? Why did you decide to use heat is basically my question.
Thanks.

I am also along for the ride. I'm hoping to get there someday. But I don't want to do oysters...Not really a market for them around here.

Pasteurization/sterilization both have their pros and cons. Pasteurization means less expensive equipment, easier handling and overall cheaper production, but less yield per square foot.
sterilization is for supplemented substrate, so you need more expensive equipment to sterilize, more expensive bags, more incubation room, and sterile work equipment(flow hood, lab space), but you get much higher yield per square foot. pasteurization is more forgiving when you are starting out and much less expensive. I'd recommend that while you are just getting started.

Okay that makes sense. Is it because pasteurization doesn't kill all competing organisms so there is competition for food?
In your personal trials, what percent yield in terms of weight does a sterilized bag out yield a pasteurized bag?

It's because bulk substrate like straw is less nutritious , less prone to contamination but less yields. On a per lb basis id say maybe 20% of the yield per lb compared to soy hull/sawdust bags.
