Lions Mane Spore Concerns
    #24231031 - 04/09/17 07:02 PM (6 years, 9 months ago)

So I heard that having too many spores in your house is bad for respiratory health. Does anyone have any wisdom on how to avoid such health concerns or if they are even true?

Thanks

Duct out a window. Makes a big difference for your FAE too (as well as keeps your house from feeling like a swamp!).

I developed all the symptoms listed in that article after working around oysters (outdoors) for a month.  Also I think I made my neighbor, 500 feet downwind sick too.  I can't be around a single fruiting oyster mushroom log for even 30 seconds without
coughing 'sputum' the next day, which takes a day or two to pass.  I heard it could be serious but I didn't realize how serious.

It took two weeks for me to get back to normal and I was extremely physically weak with a bad fever during the worst of it, and constant coughing (wretching) and very impaired breathing.  I don't know if I'm just sensitive to spores or what but the warnings in mushroom cultivation books should be way stronger imo.  There is a kind of tropical fever where I live that is somewhat common that happens to have all the same symptoms so that threw me for a while.

I don't seem to have a problem with other spores, I heard, I forget where, that oyster spores try to germinate in your lungs, so maybe its oyster specific.

Hmm well I guess so, or just fruit on the porch.

My mushrooms were on the porch, that didn't save me or my neighbor a few lots away.  Small amounts of lion maine and oysters fruiting in the kitchen didn't seem to effect me however so, I would just pay attention if you start to cough even a little.

Indeed poponon, in the effort to get more yield, colour and richness you also increase the health risk.
I can say that very healthy Golden oyster clusters are very dangerous due to the spores.

You can beam a torch at them and watch the spores release as spore streams.

So many spores from just a 300g cluser.

Just a little clarification, there were about 30 3' poly logs of elm oysters going off randomly on the porch area, half of which had fruit at any given time.  Symptoms gradually worsened over a period of 2-3 weeks, and once the logs were removed, symptoms gradually got better in the same amount of time.  It started with a little cough and minor amounts of mucus in the throat, similar to the beginning of the flu.  Fever and respiratory problems came later on.

Run a negative ioniser. This knocks spores etc out of the air. It was astounding how much more easily we could breathe after getting one.

I run one to knock potential contams out of the air before SAB work and spawning as well.

I'd always heard this about oysters which is why I won't grow them. But do golden oysters and other non-King varieties discharge spores like that? Not looking to develop allergic reactions here. I'm going to try my hand at Golden soon.

To my knowledge all oysters are spore factories. I took a spore print from a phoenix oyster a while back and it looked like someone spray painted the tin foil white in less then 24 hours.

Golden oyster is terrible, king oyster is not that bad. There are sporeless oyster strains around, not sure why I never seen them being grown on here.

Here's a vid showing golden oysters releasing spores:

From what I've read oysters are def a spore producer. I've seen slow motion vids of the spores shooting out with the force of a sneeze and traveling a good 20 feet at an incredible velocity. How long it takes for you to develop an issue I dunno but would think a respirator mask would be a good idea all the time around them. I think people with severe allergies or a compromised immune system would fare worse around them.

In the past I've had organic material drying out that seemed to aggravate someone's sinus which turned into a bad infection that antibiotics weren't even phasing. Also had some cubes going as well. The infections kept re-curring and involved some surgeries to clean all that out. Samples were sent to the lab and they couldn't really pinpoint what it was but said it was microbes like you would find in the soil. Had they really delved into it they might have been able to confirm said person had been exposed to X or Y substance. Since those episodes I don't have live matter like that near the individual and health has much improved. The swabs from the sinuses kept coming back as fungal infection so at some point I think they could have pin pointed it down to a specific host and that would not have been good.

So would pumping air out of the room be a suitable fix for this? Beyond harvesting with a mask on, what would be the optimal solution to simply getting the spores out of the area?

Have a fan exhaust air out of the room that way theres always a bit of negative pressure so spores will always go through your ducting. You can pick up a nice duct fan on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Strong-CFM-4-6-8-Inch-Inline-Fan-Hydroponics-Exhaust-Fan-Duct-Cooling-Fan-/331835934649?var=&hash=item4d42f687b9:m:mE3AWU1GhURsauxhYNupdtA

my first grow shelf was this way except I exhausted into a polyfil filter bucket. It worked good enough but I had to refresh the filter every few months. It would get crusty with spores .

Interesting. The grow area I'm going to put LM, Reishi and Oyster in basically the connecting room from outside and into the basement area. I'm concerned about spores, so I guess having a duct fan spitting air outside would be suitable. Since it's going directly outside, I shouldn't need a bucket or anything.
