Whereabouts could I find a big strainer for rye? I usually do 5 jars at once and my current strainer was from a pound shop type thing but I need another 2 and they stopped selling them.

I chuck bin bags on the kitchen floor, pour off some grains into collinder, empty grains onto floor repeat, then load jars.

Can confirm those 1litre jars stand up fine in the pressure cooker. Coir is half the price I usually pay so cheers for the headsup.

Those jars were posted before, I was saying they might not be suitable and someone else posted who sounded like they had used them and said they were not OK, and that they were easy to crack.

You might get away with using them, not sure how many cycles. I would just say be very careful and do not subject to them to heat quickly, i.e. warm them up slowly. If shaking them be certain to wear gloves.

The price made me think they were not going to be suited for repeated canning usage. But if you read the description it really sounds like they are just for show & storage.

We have fallen in love, here at Home Bargains HQ. These beautiful, elegant and vintage style Mason jars have sent us in to a frenzy, and we have spent the better part of the morning coming up with ways in which these Eerin Mason Jars can be put to use both at home and in work. Here is what we have come up with so far:

Simple table decoration, homemade preserves, retro sweets, vintage table organisers, plant/sand/seashell activities for children, LED tealight holders, picnics, party/BBQ drinks, spice holders, "Skittle vodka" (ahem), innovative salad or dessert presentation (sure to have your guests go wild!), mini vases for wild flowers, party favours, kitchen herb garden and last (for now) but not least, loose ingredient storage (flour, cereal, pasta, rice etc).

Features:

Eerin Vintage Mason Jar: 500ml (Case of 12)
Equivalent price: 59p each
Classic screw top design
Lid centre can be removed from presentation
Each jar holds 0.5L

The coir is a good price, poundland might have their £1 650g bricks in as the season is starting.

Boiling isnt the same as pressure cooking, if using for pf they'll probably stand up to steaming but repeated pcing will stress them. I have some of those cheap ones and compared to my ball jars the glass is thin as fuck if you had to give one a particularly hard smack to break up the grains they feel like theyd shatter easily. Be careful.

Fair enough, I just dropped one into a boiling pot of water and then dropped it straight from the boiling water in to cold water and it was fine.  Not sure if my physics are correct but PC should not be that stressful because even pressures on the inside and outside of the jar = 0 overall pressure?

be careful with it. Most of my jars are supermarket sauce jars, these are also not made for repeated heating, they only have to survive their first heating cycle. I have had them smash in my hands while shaking grains.

If heated slowly and evenly enough even a thin glass vase will survive. The canning ones in the US are made for repeated use.

The word vintage suggests its just for show. The same erin brand has another vintage mason jar, the descriptions are similar but notice this one clearly says not suitable for boiling water.

EDIT: a further search shows there seemingly was similar warning for the 1L screw one too.

Just bought some for my wedding to hold sweets, but could be used for loads of reasons (storage etc). C&C only, no home delivery available.

Looks like he cut & pasted that, but the link on that page goes to the homeware page with the warning missing.

Same jars being sold on ebay has the "boiling water" warning.

I will definitely be careful, with these jars.  I suspect the one you linked is not suitable because of the rubber or silicone seal.  I think retro is purely a marketing term which is trendy at moment.  I've got a mix of pasta jars and these and my pressure cooker should arrive next week so I will see how they fare and wear PPE when handling all the glass.  Cheers
