ok im using staw for the first time here cut 3'' lengths, throw in pillow case boil fer two hours, drain. so got that part dwn..when i go to put in container {turkey pan} do i just layer straw,,myc,,straw,,myc,,so on til it reaches the top.also do i need a casing layer? there is no need to soak straw before pasturizing right?would it be better to just mix a lil horse poo in there or what? what works best fer you guys?

>also do i need a casing layer?
only when its fully colonized
>there is no need to soak straw before pasturizing right?
right. no need to soak.
>would it be better to just mix a lil horse poo in there or what?
thats a personal choice. you can go straight straw or mix them.
>what works best fer you guys?
compost works the best for me.. I am on my first straw log so I will report once that gets done.

Boiling isn't quite pasturising, you need a stable temp of 170?F for pasteurisation.

I didn't notice that part.... yeah 170 is a good temp.
I did mine at 170 of 1 hour and 15 mins.

You mix the spawn into the straw, as evenly as possible, and a soak isnt needed, as pasteurization is pretty much a soak anyway.
Then you incubate it all again, untill the straw is colonised, then you case, and incubate again untill the casing is colonised, then you fruit.

No, no layers, I just mix it all together by hand, I find this is better than layers, as its more even. I do add a very thin layer of straw to the top, myself, but it isnt needed.

I like to press it a little, but not much, and try to keep it airy.
Have a read of this, as I'm still a little worried that you boiled your straw.

Yea I dont boil mine either. I put in a big pot and cover with tin foil so it holds the straw under the water then stick a thermometer down thru the foil. I bring the temp to 180 then turn it off and keep an eye on it, when it falls to 160 i turn it back on and bring it back up to 180 then turn it off again. then let it cool. It taks an hour or so to do what I just said and so far I have had very cool results. I also mix in the spawn with the straw. Dont layer it.

well im going to go ahead and play devils advocate. When I do my straw casings I pack them down. NOt too tight but tight enough that the myc doesnt need to climb over canyons between the straw. The goal with straw is to get it to colonize as fast as possible. If it is very airy, it slows down the colonizing and thus opening a window for contams. Best way to mix it is to take a garbage bag and fil it up with straw and myc, then twist it up so there is air inside and it forms a balloon. then shake it all crazy style. After its good and mixed put into the container and take a text book or somethin like that and use it to pack down the straw. I weigh about 175, so I think body weight is sufficient to pack it down, just dont go jumping up and down. wait for that to colonize throughout and then case.
