Conclusion for plant food: Mycelium do not care where nutrients come from.
They only care about solubility and the ability to utilize it (digest).

Apparently cyan's are as good as oyster's at producing carbohydrates from carbon sources.
I put my spores in pH 8.8 calcium bicarbonate water (Ca(HCO3)2 + H2O).

They ignored the pH, utilized the sources and germinated.

They are being stored at 12°C in a fridge, which helps activation.

Got some wild straw, free, from my local council maintaining a local park and riverside.
I bagged 1kg for testing purposes, I will be enriching, but only half as much.

From research straw only needs, + 0.5% nitrates by dry weight.

I just realized I have not explained why the wood peg and egg carton methods work.
They limit activity to aerobic capable, cellulose digesting organisms.

Chances of infection, even exposed, are minimal.

In regards to materials that are inhibitory, there are a few factors to consider.

If the mycelium is unable to digest said materials (genetics) then growth would be sluggish to none.
In cases of the opposite, the mycelium could be: better, average, slow but growing well.

When said materials are acidic (99% likely) they will breakdown to a higher pH.
As the reaction occurs new materials are produced, some digestible.

----

A similar pattern can be seen when growing cubensis, where they digest paper, coir and other cellulose materials.
However when grown on either a hardwood or softwood base, the results would be minimal-bad to none.

Since cubensis will yield on enriched paper (clean wood), or coir and grain.
It suggests that genetically it cannot handle some plant resins.

----

Wood based products are known for being low in nitrates, so much so, that some species developed a carnivorous appetite.
Oyster's produce a loop which directly trap nematodes, it digests them as a source of assembled protein (nitrates).

Oyster's and other wood loving fungus will also digest some bacteria and even insects (Cordyceps).

----

I believe cubensis to be a primary decomposer, where it's nitrates come from dung.
It digests cellulose and other primary sources of carbon, even starch.

Wood lovers tend to not do that well on 100% starch.

Do you have a link to oysters eating nematodes? That's really interesting.

Indeed, mycelium are carbon and nitrate predators. It would eat you if it had the chance.
