Dangers of Asbestos Duct Insulatiom
    #24221364 - 04/05/17 07:33 PM (6 years, 9 months ago)

House was built in the '20s. Probably had some type of HVAC work done in the 50s-60s that involved possible asbestos wrap on the duct work. There are a few inches of exposed wrap in the basement and I can see the paper when I look in the return registers. I would imagine the wrap runs up the ducts through the walls all the way to the second floor. I'm not going to be doing any remodeling or trying to remove the ducts anytime soon.

Is there any significant risk for just leaving it as is or is there something to worry about? Not in bad condition, but maybe slightly frayed at the edges. I don't want to open a can of worms by messing with it if there's no need too but since it's part of the air supply I want to see what I'm up against.

Asbestos  is only a problem  if it getting in the air u breath. If their r parts that u think will b blown into the air u could wrap with plastic and tape.

As long as it's not disturbed and the fibers dont get air born you should be fine. I would have a sample tested and if it is asbestos, have it removed by a company that specializes in asbestos removal.

I'm a plumber, not an HVAC guy, but in L.A. when we run across transite exhaust pipe, we are supposed to leave it in place, and not even touch it if we can help it, as long as it is intact.  If you start fucking with it, and is starts turning to dust, you're gonna have problems.

Thanks everyone. I'd say the condition of it is very good. Maybe I'll tape over the small areas I can see and at the edge of the vents as an added precaution. Other than that I won't touch it.
