Haven't had any issues with grain spawn outside. Cubes, cyans, azures... The only thing that pisses me off is the neighbour's cat keeps pissing in my cyanescens patch.

I tried grain spawn outside last year, damn slugs and some animal ate the fuck out of it. I'll buy some predator scent or something I dunno.

Never had luck using grain spawn outside myself. Oyster, kings, cubes, reishi. Grains get eaten here at least

I'll tell you what, I threw out some (very lightly comtaminated) grains once in the yard thinking they'd get eaten by birds. 4 months later, nothing has even attempted eating them. Not even slugs or insects. They're decomposing into the soil now.

I threw a big ass tub of mold grains out last year, figured they'd go away quick. Still, almost a year later, have a big pile of black/green/gray mold grains in a big ass pile in my back yard.....

I still have a disgustingly green PF cake in my garden just looking all artificially shiny in the non-green areas. It's been out there for so long and it's just not breaking down

Who's the fellow on here that does single quart trays? Need more info on spawn ratio and tub size. I have a lot of 27qt tubs. Would like to fit two trays in each. Id like to see where I'm at clean spawn wise and if one jar is bad it could potentially ruin the whole deal, so I think single jar spawning for the time being is my best chance go get some much needed fruits. Gotten one true haul (to me..) about 3.5 oz off two flushes in the past 8 months.
I looked at my posts to see when I started WBS. Literally 8 months ago. Been a heartbreaker ever since.

if you look at some of the old threads from 12 years back... I see a lot of mention of H2O2. Back then it seemed it was pretty common to use H2O2 in the water used to mist substrates.
Nowadays everyone says there is zero use for H2O2 except when dealing with cobweb mold, which they always make sure to point out is extremely rare, and that you probably don't have cobweb mold.
Has anyone actually used H2O2 for anything... I mean 12 years was a long time ago... was anyone here growing back then?
What's the deal with H2O2?

So bodhi before I asked if I believed a jar to be bacterial if I could take a grain and put it to agar to find out.
Your response was if the media supports the bacteria.
What if you used grain soak water from the same grain would that not support it since it's the same type of media (kinda)

How can you not know what bacterial looks like? What grain are you using?
slimy grain stuck to the glass is a good clue
You don't need to work hard to find examples of bacterial grain... just prep your grain a bit wet and you'll know... no need to test if it is or isnt... the myc won't be able to colonise it so that'll pretty much tell you it's bacteria, plus it will proceed to get wetter and worse over time.

Even clean looking grain will probably show bacteria on agar since we aren't really ever securing 100% bacteria free, just trying to minimize it as much as possible and maximize mycelium health.
Even the cleanest looking jars you've ever seen around here aren't 100% bacteria free.

I know what some seriously bacterial are they smell awesome I just tossed one
So we're more just looking for the one that's good enough?
Just slight bacteria but I've been driving myself crazy with this problem I feel like I have for a month. And I might not even have a problem.
Most of my jars seem to recover decently I just don't wanna half ass this. I want to give it my all you know?

Yea I mean I struggle too with obtaining wicked clean spawn... I get pretty decently clean and I rarely get contams before third flush with it but cleaner would always be better. But once you've seen grains go sour you pretty much know what it looks like. no in depth research required. If you want to go cleaner and cleaner the trick is to minimize the time that any unabsorbed moisture is in contact with PC'd grain. moisture on grain is like a endospore hatching party. Even if the moisture absorbs shortly after the bacteria have been awoken and the clock is ticking. I just keep trying stuff to minimize that moisture in contact time and my spawn just keeps getting cleaner.

That right there may ofa been exactly what I needed to hear.
I just preped some more rye and I think these are going to be my best yet. None burst seem quite hydrated pretty much dry out the outside. No visible moisture in my jars prior to pcing. So you may of just confirmed my theory about what my problem is.
At first I thought my problems were my agar but after some tips I threw that possibility out. So I've been thinking it's my grain prep. We shall see how clean these turn out
Thank you

What does it mean if it's not getting worse over time, it's just colonising a bit slower than usual? Did I luck out?

Yes. This past fall when I started growing again, after like 10 -11 years, I had noob mind set. I did successfully put it on a stalled bacterial cake. Now cake was stalled at only like 90%(done) but it worked. It cleaned up the remaining area, the mycelium recovered in a couple days and grew over the rest of it. I then let it consolidate for a week and fruited it. Crumbled it into some vermiculite, put that in a butter tub and stuck it in my SGFC. It was a full pint cake. Got one flush that was a little under a half OZ, then trich hit.
Now where I am at today, I wouldn't waste time or bother.

In other news, my pf cakes are colonizing quite well. Excited to see them grow more and eventually start the birthing/fruiting process. It's been too long since I've indulged in this fascinating hobby. Right now it's all waiting, though.
