First time - ready to fruit or wait?
    #24214114 - 04/02/17 08:51 PM (7 years, 9 months ago)

This is my first attempt at cultivation so please pardon my lack of proper record keeping. I often fly by the seat of my pants and this attempt at cultivating is no different. I'll try to do better the next go round.

So... From a mss of PE I inoculated liquid culture made of light Karo and sucanat @ approx. 4%. I know, I know LC's are notorious for contams but I had several experiments going on and experienced a few obvious contams in LC and rye berries. I pulled from what appeared to be clean(ish) LC jar. Clean based on assumptions from reading and viewing hundreds of pictures from this site.

I used the LC to inoculate 2 5lbs bags of rye berries. (approx 5 qts each?) One of the bags contamed with something black and hard. I let it ride out for a while and the myc started to take over but I wasn't willing to risk using so I dumped in my compost outside. Come to find out the bag had a hole hidden in a crease of the bag right at the spot of the contam. Led me to believe it was not my LC but the hole in the bag. Second bag moved along very nicely, in my limited and humble opinion. Fully colonized in about 2.5 weeks. Sorry, no pictures of those bags.

I used the one 5lbs bag to spawn 2 90qt tubs. Bulk substrate consists of, all approx. values, 6qts coir, 6 qts verm, 2 qts worm castings, 3/4 cup fresh coffee grounds, `1/4 cup gypsum. Brought to field capacity and pasteurized to an internal temp of 140 for 2 hours.

Spawned to bulk 3/28. In the tub pictured, I laid out approx. 3 inches of rinsed/hydrated perlite. With liner in place I added about 60% of the spawn with about 60% of the bulk sub in layers and then mixing. Added a thin layer of bulk sub on top. Total sub/spawn layer is about 3 inches. I used remaining spawn and bulk in second tub(no pics), without perlite, to a depth of about 2.5 inches.

So, based on what you might be able to see from these pics can I/should I put into fruiting conditions or wait for 100% colonization? I've read/seen pics similar where folks would wait and where folks would fruit. What say you?

By the way, when I opened my spawn I had no off smells whatsoever. The intense mushroom scent/umami was unbelievably amazing! I just kept sniffing and sniffing and sniffing! I was so excited.

Thanks in advance.

4/19 Update - A few pics as of today. Does the flush look a little light. Maybe second flush will be more?

Well done so far man. I'd say wait until fully colonized, then add a thin casing layer of your choice, just barely enough so that most of the surface if covered THEN set into fruiting.

You could also go with what mushboy suggests and fruit now. Either way will work out, but in my experience you'll have a higher chance of getting a more even flush going with my suggestion

Just wait till its ready. Patience. Last time I didn't wait, I got a flush that slowed to a halt, then it finished colonizing. My first flush was shit because of it.

He already did a pseudo casing. No need to case again.

I'm sure it would be a benefit anyway due to the fact that you don't really want your casing layer fully colonized.

Thanks for all the advice/tips and the encouragement. Truly appreciated.

Since I have two tubs I decided to take them in two directions and see what, if any, difference results. The tub with slightly less material I have set into fruiting as it was mostly colonized.

4-3 tub1

The second tub still has a little ways to go. Once fully colonized I will case with very thin layer of straight coir (should I add verm?) and set into fruiting conditions.

4-3 tub2

As and added note, in case you couldn't tell, I'm going with unmodified tubs. I plan on leaving the lid cocked at about 45° during the day, manually giving them a fanning 4-5 times a day and leaving the lid on but not sealed at night. Of course misting as necessary. Does this sound O.K. or should I adjust?

So I thought I was in a bad way and had somehow FUBAR'd my tub. I began to notice a lot of very bright white growth popping up between mycelial "blooms."(?) From what I could find it was looking like I might have somehow gotten a massive trich contam.

When I checked this morning I noticed a couple larger nodules and then I realized that maybe these are the starts of pe "blobs" or maybe they are hyphal knots? There a actually hundreds if not thousands of these little tiny bright white bumps somewhat clustered together.

Here are a couple pics with the larger nodules circled. You can also see the surrounding bright white colonies. Sorry I don't have a macro lens to get better pics.

From what I gather pe can\does behave differently. Sooooo... Do you think I'm good or is this likely contaminated?

Getting some pins. For a novice like me I think adding the casing was/is helpful. It helps maintain/retain moisture and I get a better visual clue as to when I need to mist. May be hard to notice in the pics but there is some bluing in my uncased tub. I believe this is probably due to the fact that I let it get a little dry a couple times.

It also appears to me that the cased tub is producing more pins. At least up to this point. I'm sure I'll get better with practice but I think I'll stick with casing for the near future.

No, I turn it upside down and hover just above the sub. It's a little awkward but I like the way looks too.

Thanks. Not 100% sure I was getting it right as this is my 1st but I just read and read the forums and did my best to judge by the hundreds of photos of other peoples grows.

Couldn't have done it without the Shroomerites!
