Casings colonizing on top! FRUITING ADVICE! ~PICS~
    #2421440 - 03/12/04 01:01 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Alright...here are a couple of pics of my casings.  Each has a pint of substrate beneath a 60/40 mix.  I just put these in my incubator at 82-85F on Tues., and here is what they look like tonight.

What should I do next??  Cold shock, dunk??  I have an 18 gallon clear rubbermaid container that I am going to use for fruiting.  I also have a bag of perlite.  Can someone tell me the steps to making my terrarium (soaking the perlite, how deep to fill the tub, misting the walls with what solution, etc. etc.).  Also, when should I begin the fruiting process??

I've gotten this far and don't want to blow it in the end.  Thanks guys for all of your help through this long process...which has been well over a month.  But, it's my first time so it's worth it

Patch case???  Doesn't that just mean covering up those white spots with the same casing mix??  Aren't they spread out enough to bypass the patch case technique??  Also, what about cold shocking??  And, the terrarium setup??  Should I be setting that up now, or can that been done a couple of hours beforehand....thanks!!

You can fruit those casings now if you want. What i would do though is patch those thick spots because they are beginging to overlay. Patch em then incubate a couple more days and when you see mroe mycilium popping up then fruit them.

Take your terranium and put about 2 inches of wet perlite on the bottom. 3 inches if you want. You need to give those casings light some how as well. Also airflow. What i have is a small comp fan in my casing giving fresh air and a small flouro inside the tub. Also you have to get the temps down to 68-76 so pinning occurs.

Hope this helps.

Shit...should I go ahead and fruit them then?? Can I wait until the morning to do it??

Also, I have to prepare my fruiting chamber. Don't I have to soak the perlite, drain it, then put it in the tub?? thanks!!

One more thing...I need to get some more perlite tomorrow, but should I use regular water or does it matter?? Also, if I pour it straight into my tub and then add water, how much water do I put in?? Say if I have 2 inchs of perlite...thanks!!

You mean you can patch case and fruit immediately?? So, I could just whip up another batch of 60/40 mix, apply, and fruit?? I only slept a few hours so I could get up early (now) to deal with these things. Thanks!!

In fact, you can do your casing at first without having to incubate it. Since I do so, no overlay happened. IME, mycellium will colonize the top layer no matter if you incubate or not. Whatever you do, patching is a must. However, try to patch earlier in future casings, don?t wait to see those dense balls.

Ahh...to hell with it!!  I'm just putting these into the fruiting chamber.  I don't think patching them is going to make "that" much of a difference.  This is my first attempt so...live and let learn   Thanks guys!!

PS--I know to fan 2-3 times or more a day...what about misting??  I don't mist the casings at all, but just the perlite and walls of container, correct??

I would patch case. About humidity, IMO you should deliver the amount of water needed to support a big nice flush the 2-4 following days right after the casing was done. This way you won?t need to worry too much about misting, you?ll need just to keep the right RH via cool mist, air bubbler or whatever. I do it this way and mist casings just between flushes.
