I wus just wondering what other options I can use as an alternative to hydra tron/geolite? The one I was thinking is pea sized gravel stones had anybody tryed this? Will it work? :yesnod:

I havent been able to find geo-lite or hydroton either. I have been using lava rocks. Magash told me that the lave would work better then the river stones. I have used them twice with good results. The lava rocks I found were kinda big and it was hard to get them flat enuf for the cakes to stand up. I bought some fencing at Lowes to make a bed for them to stand on.

You need to wash them good before you use them. They have lots of sand in them.

As niteowl has posted, lavarock is your best bet. More porous than river or gravel stones - better wicking action.

Yeh dont like the way perlite sticks to cakes and gets all over the place.
I know where and how to get hydrotron & geolite but some cat has a large terrarium and wants a cheaper alternative.
If it was using gravel it would get it prewashed from a store the stones are about the size of peas.

The pebbles would work, just not as well as the lava rocks. As far as being cheaper, buying pre washed pebbles isnt going to be cheap! Lava rocks are the way to go. You can get a big bag of them at Lowes pretty cheap.
