Animal Rights
    #2420905 - 03/11/04 11:02 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Okay well since I was very young I have always had a wonderful love of animals. I have always respected them and considered them not an equal - but a higher species.

I have been a vegetarian for... many years. I did take a break from it because I got sick from lack of nutrients but I quickly learned how to replace things and now I'm healthy and not eating meat. I avoid ALL animal products when possible.

I just want to see if anyone else is as passionate about this as I am.

I have to say that being in the fashion business - it's very hard to be into animal rights considering they are used so much. Thankfully there is a heart somewhere in the business and at my school there is concern for animal rights and being anti-fur.

I try to visit shelters as much as possible - donating whatever possible. It's not too hard to donate old newspapers, toys, food, treats... even if you do not have something to donate - you do have yourself. I remember my first time doing this and going to a shelter with my boyfriend and after playing with the animals and just falling inlove with all of them - I went out to the car with him and just burst into tears because I felt helpless.

I still do sometimes - but I try my best.

Okay I don't know what else to say but I wanna find more Animal Rights activists here!

It's an absolutely desperate situation. We're living through the biggest extinction period since the dinosaurs. Profit and the free market don't take any other life on earth into account.

And I'm certainly more on the side of the animal than the gutless, cowardly assholes going round blasting at them with guns for "sport"

I'm not against hunting animals for sport, but what's so sportsmanlike about shooting an animal with a rifle from a distance? I think if people really want to hunt for sport, they should level the playing field a bit, like hunting bears with a bowie knife.

Instead of putting so much effort into saving animals, you should think about Habitat for Humanity or other programs to help the desperate and starving humans in this world. Animals are animals, and I don't feel it makes you any more of an enlightened person to be a vegetarian.
If you are doing it for health reasons, then kudos to you for taking care of your body. But I'm just saying, there are human rights atrocities occuring all over the world right now that are a 1000 times more heart wrenching than what is happening to puppies sitting in some shelter. Animals are not a 'higher' species than humans just as humans are not a 'higher' species than animals. We ARE animals. But our lives are more important relative to animals because we reciprocate emotions and communicate.
I'm also willing to bet you wouldn't save animals that aren't cuddly wuddly and oh so cutesy wootsy. What about saving fish from vast over-hunting occurring off the coasts of many continents including japan. What about cockroaches and spiders?

Hunters do more to protect the environment than your blind ignorance will allow you to see and far more than you will ever do.

Animals should never be considered higher nor equal than the humans that have dominion of them. With that said there should be humane ways of killing them for our consumption. Animals are Animals NOT humans and should have absolutly no rights.

This is true. Actually, many members of the Sierra Club and other environmental organizations are hunters. Hunters have a vested interest in protecting the environment.

I tend to speak up about animals on only two fronts:
1. If an endangered species is being threatened. Cause that's just fucked up.
2. If important ecosystems are being destroyed in order to create farm land. I'd rather go vegetarian than know I'm eating a cow that grazed where rainforests used to be.

Hunters do more to protect the environment than your blind ignorance will allow you to see and far more than you will ever do.

If we ignore hunters bringing the vast bulk of big game animals in Africa and Asia to the brink of extinction, the bison in America, the eastern elk..the carolina parakeet etc etc etc..

And we ignore their manipulation of animals? habitat by burning and bulldozing forests to increase the food supply for target species, at the expense of non-target species.  Hunting programs also cause wildlife overpopulation by maintaining ?buck only? hunts, which result in a disproportionate number of does, and also by annihilating predators to increase the number of prey. Lastly, hunters move some animals such as raccoons and antelopes to other states to increase the amount of ?game? in the latter, therein disturbing the ecosystems of both states.

If only we all had such blind ignorance eh?

Aren't most hunts to limit overpopulation and not truly for recreation?

No. Most hunted species are not considered to be overpopulated even by the wildlife agencies that set seasons and bag limits. Black ducks, for instance, face continued legal hunting?even on National Wildlife Refuges?despite the fact that their populations are at or near all-time lows. If hunters claim that they hunt to prevent overpopulation, then they should be prepared to forgo hunting except when it really is necessary to manage overpopulated species. This would mean no hunting of doves, ducks, geese, raccoons, bears, cougars, turkeys, quail, chuckar, pheasants, rabbits, squirrels, and many other species.

What's more, hunters are usually the first to protest when wolves, coyotes, and other predators move into an area and begin to take over the job of controlling game populations. The State of Alaska, for example, has instituted wolf-control (trapping and shooting) on the grounds that wolf predation may bring caribou populations down to a level that would limit the sport-hunting of caribou. Finally, hunters kill opossums, foxes, ravens, and numerous other plentiful species without the pretension of shooting them so that they do not starve or freeze to death.

actually - i love ocean life as well. my plan is that after i get my BA in the college and program I'm in now - I will get a degree in either Marine Bio or Zoology.

cuddly puppies and cute kittens are really not my biggest concern. It's those adorable animals that find families first - I put my concerns into injured and older animals. I would love to save spiders and others animals if I could... what I do now though is i REFUSE to ever step on or kill any living animals. even if a spider is in my house or something - i scoop it up onto a piece of paper and put him outside and let him live his life.

as far as joining humanity things - i hate humans. i am actually ashamed to be a human being because of all the horrible things we have done to this world. yes children are starving and people are dying however - that does NOT compare to all the horrible things we've done to the animals and earth.

there are OVER 6 billion of us - infact I think someone just told me it's 8 billion now (can't be sure) - THAT my friends is over population... who is gonna hunt us?!?

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I'm sorry evolving but how can you enjoy being a part of a species that kills and destroys? Humans are the ultimate cancer - it's true. We try to kill off cancer by radiation and other medications but it figures out a way to become immune to it and it keeps multiplying and growing...

now look at humans - we are being infected with diseases and such however we manage to fight it and get tolerance against it and then just keep multiplying and growing in numbers.

it's scary

i love my family and i love my friends and i am very polite and kind to strangers however - i have a choice on what to use my time and free will for and I strongly believe that the animals and environment need me much more than another person who will add to the 8 billion does.

I do have some compassion for animals. Mainly the animals that are stuck in the factory farms. They live in terrible conditions and not to mention the meat is flavorless. I'm for free-range meats.

Also whats the point of keeping animals? They're a hassle and they need maintenance. And sometimes they lose their novelty and then the owner ditches them and then they go out and fuck like crazy. All strays need to be shot on sight, is there really a need to delay to keep them in a shelter, then gas them and sent them to a processing plant for the flesh to be distrubuted out into animal feed?

I'm also against hunting non-flying animals. ooOOoOOoo, you sit around for a hours for a deer(or whatever) to come and then pull a trigger, wow, that must be so hard, way to kill it like a real man.

Humans aren't the ultimate cancer, we were formed this way out of nature so how could we be anything other than the end result of natural pressures? Unless you believe in good and evil and all that other bollocks... Anyways, Del, I think you may have a skewed perception of humanity based on a few who ruin it for the rest of us. Other species of animals hunt for sport, not just humans. Does that make them unworthy or somehow less good than non-predatory animals?
Humanitarian efforts are aimed at improving the quality of life of those living in 3rd world nations, not to increase their numbers, but actually to reduce them in the long run. When a country raises its standard of living, the birthrate drops dramatically. It is partly because of people adopting the attitude that 'it isn't worth saving humanity' that leads to desperate catastrophes like famine, disease, etc.
Your passion is admirable, but your priorities may be a little bit off.

Do you hate all carnivores? Lots of animals kill and destroy. Just because our population has gotten out of hand doesn't mean our species itself is evil.
