You know it's time for a new gasket when.....

You have to use rubber bands on the handles of your pc in order to squeeze the lid on tight enough to get to pressure

I too think holding a bomb together with rubber bands is a sound practice

It doesn't suddenly become a bomb just because I used rubber bands to create a better, tighter seal/remedying a small little leak that was hindering the pc from getting up to pressure quickly..

There is no danger. The lock engages when the pressure builds.. Worst case scenario the pc is actually less likely to "blow up/become a bomb" with this leaky worn out little gasket I have.. pressure exits from the weakest areas of least resistance first, which would be out the leak.

I needed to get some masters started so I did what I had to cook the jars/finish the job.

Feel free to mock me for being clever and inventive enough to not be setback by the problem/having to wait for a new gasket. Go right ahead and make more baseless, stupid hyperboles too..

I understand it.. people think "pressure cooker" & "n!gg@r rigging" and think uh oh.

There wasn't any danger, just a simple, non invasive, temporary quick fix

If you get the gasket hot and give it a good couple stretchs it sometimes holds a good seal again

Mine finally gave out tho.. Snapped... Gave me a black eye

Sadly I've done this elastic band shit to stop the gasket from leaking  even after stretching and Vaseline and shit, it didn't work. Ordered a new gasket, and elastic banded the handles shut..

Newbie pressure cooker question [Re: Mad Season]
    #24209461 - 03/31/17 10:01 PM (7 years, 9 months ago)

I've been searching in an effort to avoid posting a new thread and came upon this one.  So in spirit of this can anyone here tell me if I tell you I see a PC PRESTO 01781 on Ebay for $23 should I pull the trigger?  Its aluminum.  Is that inferior to steel?  If I'm just smart about using it so it won't explode (its got a gauge and everything) is that not good enough?  Any advice?  From what I've read it should be ok to use on a glass stove.  Does that set off any alarms?  Can this PC be ok for quart jars?  Is this price too cheap to trust?  or maybe you direct me to a better thread that talks about what PC's to use.

So mush4, those have worked 4 for u?  You say you have a couple?  That must mean you've used them to sterilize substrate without problems?  Kind of sounds good to me.  $90/piece?  Then 23 would be a steal.  Not much of a response to these questions for some reason but I have half a mind to try it.  Anybody else?  Anybody?

Presto 23  (and Mirro has one too) is the largest PC you can get for under 100$.
They work quite well.
You can fit 10, 1 quart jars in them , 7 standing and 3 layed down on top.

I have one of these and an AA 921. Its nice having two of them, you can get as much done at once as one of the very large AA pcs

Sounds good.  Thanks for your responses.  Its made it easier to do the dirty deed which has now been done.  If all goes well I'll be getting a legit PC for cheap.  Hope its in it original box and unopened and all parts working.  I've seen other places selling this model for $70 so I hope $23 isn't too good to be true.  We'll see.  Thanks again folks.  If this baby has all its arms and legs I'll certainly let you all know.  Maybe that'll help the next guy pull the trigger on somepen like this.  I guess I'll just report back on this very thread.  Unless advised otherwise. :mushroom2:

So far it WAS too good to be true.  Ebay cancelled the order.  No reason for it.  Now I just got to continue shopping and keeping an eye on my bank account.  Oh well.  At least I feel confident that I'm searching for the right kind of PC.  After all the reading, it seems that's a pretty important detail to overcome for a newbie like me.

Only real difference between presto and all american IME is that if your presto boils dry its likely to warp, where-as AA's are  indestructible tanks.

Still recommend presto though. Pretty sure they're both made of aluminum

So its been 20 days or so.  I couldn't resist posting right now because I'm so excited.  I found and ordered another same model PC.  The other one I am happy to report that I DID get a refund from eBay or PayPal(not sure which one deserves the credit, perhaps both).  Quite pleased with that.  It was too good to be true but I got my money back.  The next one is due tomorrow.  I can't wait!  It sets me back $63.  Used but pictures looked good.  Its supposed to come with extra new gasket, a couple of over pressure plugs, a jar grabber, an interesting basket like rack along with the normal flat rack.  I can only hope the gauge will be accurate.  Maybe a local hardware store can quickly tell me.  I'm going to test it then order spores. So two questions now.  Where to order spores?  Any suggestions?  And... should I start my own thread to post my progress and where on this site should I do that?

I use to work in very close proximity to hydraulic pumps at 3500 PSI...trust me...after that 15 PSI is nothing..

Ok, I think I gotcha.  It doesn't matter?  The gauge is designed for very low pressure and as long as it holds pressure it should be fine?  I'm just under the impression that it becomes important to make sure it is around 15 psi to provide the heat it takes to kill the bad that infiltrates this type of environment. Obviously a pressure cooker doesn't work with 3000 psi.

But you responded to neither question I had.  Spores? and I guess I will start a thread in "Mushroom grow logs and pictures".

I have my heart set out on Penis Envy.  The reading I have done suggests a successful grow can yield significantly with this strain.  But it also appears that the strain is susceptible to comtam and the spores ordered could be bad?  I'm not sure about what spores to order to insure the best chances of success.  Based on my reading, multispore to agar to isolated strain is nirvana.  But I intend to take precautions to keep the atmosphere as clean as possible during inoculation.  Come back.

So a pressure cooker came with the house.  How nice.  I can only be so lucky that this PC will work.  I have faith.  New ones are around $100 or more so 63 ain't so bad.  I suspect as long as my range will provide the heat necessary I should be ok.  That's just why I wonder about the gauge.  Will 15 psi actually be 15 so as to kill the bad guys.  I think I get it as far as WBS.  First soak to spawn bad guys then kill with 15 psi heat. I just thought maybe 15 should be 15.  We'll see I guess.

Sorry I didn't read the entire post just saying 15 PSI isn't much pressure. Although I've heard of malfunctions and green beans splattered on the ceiling but 15 PSI isn't much...once it blows the pressure dissipates instantly. I use to be nervous working around mine even though I've been around a lot more pressure but not anymore.

Sorry no experience with PE

try oats vs WBS. I hate WBS...nasty stuff. I boil oats 45 minutes then drain/dry then PC for 90 minutes...no issues.

Well, all my reading has been around WBS.  Oats is foreign to me.  Do you have any links to point me in that direction?  WBS is so easy to obtain.  You say nasty so you grow successfully?  I want to know more.  What strain do you use?  Is there any difference? Sorry, I'm so new.

Well the thread was showing ingenuity with a failing gasket so that's what I was commenting on here fruit. There is a search function here that's quite useful...try it out. :zaphod:

Edit: sorry not trying to be a dick but there is a thread that's active in this same forum from Bohdi I think called something like "easy as fuk oat prep"...take a look.
