Is an air filter needed for my setup?
    #2420607 - 03/11/04 09:33 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Im a beginner, my setup consists of a rubbermaid bin with dual tube air pump running 2 bubble wands completely submerged on the bottom covered with wet perlite, using 1:10 peroxide/water. I've seen similar setups but with a polyfill filter between pump and wand. Will the peroxide be enough to ward off contams or do I need a filter?

Any advice is helpful. You guys are great! I been lurking for sometime just taking in the knowledge you folks drop.

I had a similar setup and never bothered about filtering my airpump. No contamination problems. Cakes were flushing at least 3 or 4 flushes without any problem.

This kind of setup makes a lot of humidity, around 99-100% RH. Might be a problem with casings since too much RH is risky for a contaminated casing layer. At least that's what I noticed. Casings should have around 90% RH.

Hope it helps.

empath, I created a filter-box for my air-pump, so that
all the air that goes into my terrarium is more clear and
free of contam. I don't remember where I've been reading
this process, and I don't want to claim it was my idea :wink::

1) Take a little box big enought to contain your air-pump;
(remember that if it's too small the temp inside will
achieve high level)

2) clean it well with some bleach and cut 2 holes on the
opposite sides, one for the tube air and one for the wire;

3) tap the holes with some polyfill;

You're done. That way (if the box is well sealed and clean
inside) no contam will be able to easily reach your fresh
air. I used and old shoe box for that purpose.

Good luck :thumbup:

If you are using air pumps, its quite
easy to filter them, so I would, and do.

This is what I use clisk here, plus my air pump already has an air filter on the bottom of it where it draws its air from, if it is a dual outlet it should have one...good luck bro.

Thanks to all. I think I'm going to look for the check valve/filter at my local pet shop, its looks cheap enough. If they have none I will try to fashion one like Loki's. And if all else fails I know I can do the shoe box! Thanks again
