Plywood/sheet rock panel lifter * 1
    #24189774 - 03/24/17 06:41 PM (6 years, 10 months ago)

OK so I'm doing a room and decided to do plywood 4x8 sheets 5/8" thick.  I'd already done the walls which weren't too hard to get in place and screwed off.  I've got a few tricks for locating boxes that turned out titties.

Anyway, the ceiling was a bit dreaded to do on a ladder what a pain.  Rather than rent, I bought a panel lifter from Home Depot.  Normally 299 for 239.  Had pretty good reviews and apparently the same unit they use for a rental so I figured what the hey.

Well the box looked a little rough but it was packaged decently and not damaged so good so far.  Heavy unit, check.  Easy to put together, yeah not much to assemble, check.  Instructions, not too great but at least they were in the box along with parts list and expanded drawing which was nice.

OK as to using it, you can put the panels onto either vertical or horizontal.  For ceiling the clips that hold it on vertical mode get swung away and you can press the sheet cleanly up to the ceiling.  This thing goes up to 11 feet, sweet as we have a 10 ft ceiling.

It works great, lifting is a breeze, easy to operate steady lifting, and best of all can crank that sucker up with some pressure which can come in handy getting it screwed off.

Two thumbs up!

i've watched two people struggle to do ceiling-work, while watching one-person breeze through with a lifter.

i also worked at a Harbor Freight for 9 months and heard multiple people say how they aren't that easy to use.

each folk for each stroke

Anything Harbor Freight would sell probably didn't work.  Thieves.

That's part of my point, buy the model that works, spend a few bucks more.

I did some ceilings with 5/8, that's some heavy shit.  I actually had help but we had a lot of luck using scrap lumber (2x4 studs) to fashion a sort of lifter, but it worked more like a "holder in place".  It would hold a sheet up once you got it up there which was cool, so I could screw it down.

I got some truck ramps and chocks at Harbor Freight that have lasted years.  They're great for quick oil changes on my pickup.  I've always regarded their tools as "single-serving or one use only" though.

Ever since Harbor Freight shipped me a piece of junk drill that was supposed to have a reverse feature but didn't, and I had to hassle with shipping it back to get my money back, I think it's called a bait and switch, in their mind somehow somebody would only drive screws in, never have to pull one out.  It was absurd.  Bunch of thieves.

I use them for shit like cheap impact rated socket bits, stuff I expect to beat the shit out of or use until it breaks, and I generally get my money's worth.  I don't think they really hide the fact that their products are mostly garbage.  But yeah, a drill with no reverse is an absurd concept on its face.

oddly, we had people who rented them and had trouble with it, so they decided to try the one that HFT sells.  but yes, HFT is shit unless you're buying basic hand-tools, and that's only cause they have a lifetime replacement.  i remember one day when my buddy burnt through four motors of 4" angle grinders.  5th one lasted through the job, lol

Isn't it amazing Sears actually used to be a pretty good store.  At a minimum you could always bring something back and get your $$ in return.  The tool section was always the draw and the Craftsman name respected.

Now, you go into a Sears and you'll probably see zero customers and maybe one clerk who is a jerk.  Shit is piled helter skelter.  Then you gotta listen to the clerk whine about shit while eating pizza.

I have to say Home Depot has at least tried to give better service.  They don't always know the answers but at least have some people around to ask who are somewhat courteous and knowledgeable.  Sears went the other way when their reputation was bad they just piled on.

Sears always feels like it's in the midst of closing down shop when I go in there.  Craftsman has gone to shit.  Lowe's has discontinued a lot of good brands (Home Depot still carries Klein for example, Lowe's has its own shitty alternative brand).  I prefer Home Depot also these days and I used to vehemently hate that place.  At least I'll find what I need when I go there.  I gave up on the possibility of "good customer service" from any retail entity years ago.

I think Sears is in the midst of closing many stores.  I notice Home Depot locally has less cashiers but the ones they do have are actually working instead of standing around.  Lately if you ask for help in plumbing or electrical they do send someone over.  The last guy on the plumbing really did take his time and patiently help me get the parts.  Sometimes it's a pain there just finding the particular part on their wall.  But yeah like you say usually HD will have some inventory.  This includes water heaters which when you need one it's nice to have one there and ready to go as I did recently, buy it and leave.  Anyway somebody at HD is doing something right much as I hate to admit it.  Still, there have been some epic fuck ups there including a twice damaged range that got lost in the store and took over an hour to locate.  Appliances everywhere I mean even in garden.  Craziness.

When it comes to getting parts HD is pretty much useless.  Their online ship to the store system has been pretty decent and the shit comes in pretty quickly like I say hopefully not damaged.  First jig saw dropped and bent.  Part of the problem is the people packaging stuff often do a very poor job like that range it had no packing and once the fork lift guy picked it up once the bottom was fucked.  Stupid shit like that.

All those big box stores treat their employees like herds of farm animals, and maybe a lot of them deserve it because they're docile useless motherfuckers.  I used to work for one of those companies 5+ years ago and I busted my ass to help cover multiple departments on a regular basis.  I was always chosen for shit that obviously required a responsible individual to be a willing participant, but there was never really a reward, just a phantom promise of it.  Lately, it feels like they just hire the lowest common denominator in places like Lowe's and you end up asking some kid who doesn't know what the fuck you're talking about for simple things like conduit LB's, etc.  It used to be a place where you could be proud to say you work there.  They've literally ensured that their workforce is dumber than it has ever been with their corporate policies, gutting of sales incentives, benefits, manufacturer sales incentives (SPIFFS), insurance (partially thanks to the gov't) and with their absurd budget expectations (which they don't actually expect you to ever accomplish, thus ensuring you will always fall short and never receive your bonus, etc).  There is no motivation to do a good job at those places, beyond the personal self satisfaction of having done a good job, or done something good to help someone solve a problem.  That's the only thing I liked about the job.  Often times the only reason people seem more nice than usual is because they've been warned of the potential of a secret shopper in their midst and nobody feels like getting an ass chewing over failing one of those.

there was a story on NPR recently about how sears and k-mart are both likely to shut down.  sears has been closing down stores for at least 15 years, k-mart for at least 10.  since sears bought k-mart they'll both probably fail.  k-mart often has so much overstock clothing they're selling stuff 50%+ off all the time.  Same shit as any other "department" store (like target, walmart, etc...) but waaaaay cheaper.  personally, i don't care if the stores look crappy.  i'm only in there for 15 minutes every couple months.

and regarding craftsman, even the quality (material) of their products has declined over the years.

Home Depot at our local store at least has seriously gotten rid of a lot of dead wood.  The effect is that the remaining people actually work instead of standing around.  They must be nervous they could be next.  The useless 3 cashiers at self check out are gone, down to one and should be zero what was the point of self check out?
