Has anyone tried this with oatmeal instead of cornmeal? Would it work?
Also has is it possible to do this blenderless (i.e.: shaking the jar vigoriously) ala Blenderless tek ?

Yes, it's possible to do a blenderless with this with a minor tweak.
Use a stainless wire, make it a ball and sterilize it in the bottle with the water. The wire will break the puck very easily.
I'm pretty sure it would also work without the wire but this way you can get more goodies mixed in the water which will translate in faster colonization times.

Blenderless cornmeal was a failure on my end. Inoculated on Monday and only see germination on top. I was unable to sufficiently break up the cornmeal puck.
I was thinking of adjusting the cornmeal recipe and use more water to make it more soft (thus easier to break up).

(it's really hard to get clear photos of cultures in pp5 containers with an potato camera)
alright here's where i am.
i went with half the called for recipe.
1/2 cup of water 2 table spoons of yellow cornmeal pced for 35 minutes
I'll be inoculating using 2 methods with the same culture. wedges first then syringe some water in and suck it out. boiling water style. 1. 3 wedges will be taken to 3 cornmeal plates 2. 2 cornmeal plates will be hit with 2 drops of oldschool LI
The variety is Texas Yellow Capif this works out i definitely need at least 1 more blade assembly for christmas.

All 5 plates seem overly wet using 1/2 cup of water to 2 table spoons of cornmeal. The LI plates i have not much hope for. The 3 wedge plates could dry up a bit and be ok.
Next time ill try using less water and some agar to stiffen up the puck. Did anybody ever try adding a bit of cornmeal and agar together to see how that went? I think they might complement each other well.
What i gathered from muda and munch's LI thread was the chunks of mycelium growing on agar are the first to have leapoff vs mycelium not lodged on anything. Thats probably thr key to the faster than usual colonization speeds seen on cornmeal and not on brf powder if i had to guess. The granularity.

Made 6 more CMP's in big lots blueberry pp5 snap containers.
3 plates made with 1/2 cup water 2 table spoons of CM
I like this consistency a lot more. I think they will dry out a bit more and be less nasty looking. I boiled off a bit of watet until the CM thickened up good.
3 other plates 1/2 cup water 2 table spoons of CM 1 gram of agar agar powder. Didnt see much dofference in using agar vs not using agar.
Heres the update on the plates i nocced on 12/10 2 days ago.
Agar 2 CM Is ahead. It's taken root quicker than agar by itself. Love the fast growth. LI 2 CM No signs pf growth yet.
Im hoping these break apart easily enough that i can do blenderless liquid inoculant.

Very nice, I will try your recipe soon. Have you tried mixing just water and BRF? Wonder if that mix would break up well, maybe if one mixed in atiny bit olive oil the BRF would coma apart easier, this is something im gonna experiment with soon

Brf and water was tried already. Its a bit slower so no real advantage to use it. Its good if you dont have access to agar.
I think agar2CM is much faster than LI2CMBl so far. even half a cc leaves pooling. I dumped out the excess water on the sab floor.
Next batch I want to drop the water content further. 1/3 cup of water to 2 table spoons CM.

I inoculated WBS jars on 12/23. I used cornmeal wedges and cornmeal slurry and blenderless LI. 1/4 pint water to 1 plate for the slurry. A couple wedges for the cornmeal 2 grain. Shook them up for 45 seconds each. No growth at all in the cornmeal plate and cornmeal slurry. The BLI has recovery. Maybe i shook it up too much damaging the mycelium.
Heres some of the new thicker plates i have going from LI instead of wedges.
This time ill be paient and wait for 100% colonization of the puck.. One puck will go straight into grains without a shake, the second will be blenderless li'ed, and the third will get forked into grain with a sterilized fork.

What do you mean "no growth in the cornmeal plate and CM slurry? You mean no growth when you inoculated grain? Or no growth in the plates? sry maybe I'm tired but i don't get it

4 jars were slurried, 4 cornmeal wedged, and 3 BLI.
3 jars showed growth on day 3. The first 2 are BLI and the last 1 is slurry. I think i shook it up too vigorously.

hmm... Doesn't seem like mycelium would suffer from a vigorous shake.. Maybe give it a couple of more days to show..

thats what i thought as well. eat has said in this thread that about 15 ml's or 1 table spoon is enough slurry per quart.

Shouldn't take that long even if you blend it for more than 10 seconds.
Were you saying your cornmeal plate inoculations to grain were not recovering in the grain jars?
But I've also had some slower recovery due to blending the shit out of the Li. Like over 30 seconds. If its like 15 seconds you should be ok.
Is it all the same culture?
Yes let the plate colonize 95% but not touch the edges of the glad round. I give it like a millimeter from the edge.
If your going to fork the puck into grain. Why not just tiger drop with one quick flip? You can simply push the edges of the puck from the outside so it is free from the glad round and tiger drop it to a grain jar.
Josex have you used a blender ball? I was going to attempt one in a pint jar one day but it seemed all clunky and that I would have a tough time breaking up a plate. I think the cornmeal would break up easier than an agar plate using a blender ball.
