Choosing a VPN
    #24187509 - 03/23/17 10:51 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

With the recent bill that your internet browsing history can now be sold to third parties, I would like to browse the internet more anonymously.  I've been looking at a few VPN services, and I'd like some input from people who have used them before I bite the bullet.  I've narrowed it down to four:

-Internet Privacy Access
-ExpressVPN
-IPVanish
-NordVPN

Any advice would be appreciated!

I signed up with NordVPN recently. It is fast, I get 115 Mbps down 90 Mbps up going through a chicago site.
They don't port forward so torrenting needs to be done through a proxy. I think you can use the proxy through the vpn, but I haven't tested that.

I read PIA is better for torrenting, but I don't know anything else about them.

I don't really torrent anything, so anonymity, speed, and price are the things I am most concerned with.  Good to hear that NordVPN gets such excellent speeds.

Give Hotspot Shield a try... it's free and pretty decent but there is also an elite version that doesn't cost that much and it can be used on many different platforms

NordVPN says they don't keep any logs, I got two years for $79, lots of sites to choose from, good speed. Netflix blocks vpns, so that may be an issue. I have a pfsense firewall so I can vpn the whole house on one connection. I just got it a week ago, you can cancel in the first 30 days.

All you need is the Tor Browser Bundle. Tor leaves no evidence on disk if you shut it down completely after your session. Companies will still collect your browsing history, but that history is only attributable to "Tor user."

Using a VPN means you pay for a second IP that's as persistent as the first. Your ISP can see you connecting to it and your VPN provider can see your traffic. Both entities can be subpoena'd. One hop doesn't make you anonymous.

Please see my draft computer security tek.

I went ahead and bought NordVPN, but it's so slow I can't even connect to any server!  Any tips?
