I know this is a pretty newb question and I'm sure I'll get a few laughs from it but I just keep wondering. Is the foil there to prevent the poly from getting wet? Or what's the purpose to wrap the foil around the top?

Yes. From what I understand, Its not so much getting the poly wet but keeping the water content from being messed up

I wouldn't use cider vinegar lol.

Vinegar is optional and only for use with tap water. Distilled water is what you should use and needs no vinegar

I did this last night with your oat tek. took the jars out this morning and the majority of the oats were in one giant clump. I hit the jars against my hand several times and they broke up but some of them still have decent size chunks? Should i keep hitting the jars until the vast majority of clumps are gone or should I be fine as long as I hit them a few times and broke up the main bug clump?

In another post you were talking about using an autoclave and you said "You would want to use it on a setting that doesn't dump the steam at the end of the cycle."
At the end of my PC cycle I pull weight off and let the steem dump to get to jars quicker and let them cool quickly. I could not find anything in your tek that says to let it cool on its own. Is dumping steem at end of time cycle a bad idea? I know its two different machines but same concept right?

Was hoping you would look it up

Quote:

The most common causes of dry grains are failure to turn down the stove once the PC reaches pressure.  Every time the weight rattles, steam escapes from the PC AND from the jars.  The second most common cause is lifting the weight at the end of the cycle to dump steam.  This dries out the jars because they're still at 15 psi inside the jars, thus that steam escapes, taking the moisture with it.  Always allow the PC to cool slowly and naturally

Quote:

20 psi is fine for grains, but you sure don't want the steam popping off a lot.  I run my AA 75X sterilizers at 20 psi.  If you release much pressure instantaneously, it can dry out grains, crack jars, and cause spawn bags to swell up and/or burst.  Generally, autoclaves are not suitable for mycology unless they have manual controls.  Some dump the pressure at the end of the cycle.  This is fine for surgical instruments, but not for cultures and grains, etc.

There's been hundreds of autoclave threads.  Most dump pressure at the end of the cycle and are not appropriate for anything but tools.  The liquid in your substrate mix would evaporate when the pressure is dumped.

Of course this seems obvious once you understand how a pressure cooker works.

I have a question regarding temperatures. Every source I find says that 15psi cooks at like 120degrees Celsius, but pasteurising needs 70degrees celcius. Is there something I’m not understanding? How can I check my pressure cooker is running at 70 degrees at 15psi?
I’m at a total stand still as I’m having a big problem working this out. Can’t find information on the temperature anywhere. Thanks I’m advance for any help guys

It will never be 70c at 15psi...

Pasteurization is something completely different than sterilization with a pressure cooker.

eBay has a bunch of used Presto 22 quart PCs like this one. Any reason not to go for that - are there better features in the newer ones?

Not knowing how the previous owners treated it turns me off. Pressure gauge might be inaccurate and if you're looking to tape quarters to your weight it is probably preferable to get the pc new.

Great tek, Thanks Bod, helped me a lot.

After using the quarters with great success, I made a 17g brass spacer that fit between the two pieces of the Presto 23 quart weight.
