Fair enough thanks for the quick response! I’m using half pants and it seems like the water will be very close to the foil or far up the side of the jar. I’ll just use bunched up foil A LA Bods initial post to raise the trivet.

I wouldn't do that. The trivet prevents items from contacting the PC's bottom surface while it's receiving direct heat. I'd expect a glass jar to shatter if used the way you propose. Why do you want to raise the trivet?

What he said. You don't need to raise the trivet. You only need to raise things up if you don't have a trivet.

Why do you need to sterilize the grain after boiling it for 45 minutes? It should be plenty sterile by then, right?

No, you need the water to boil at higher temps than normal to achieve sterility

Also what's the purpose of putting the grain in jars vs just straight in the pressure cooker?

The jars have filters and will keep the grain sterile.

So if I plan to use the grain right away in a monotub, I don't need the jars?
Thanks for the responses!

No. That's not how any of this works

O ok, sorry I haven't done it before and there's so many different methods. I've been trying to condense it and choose one way but it's a lot of information.

Think of it like if you boil the grains and then take them out to put into a jar…are they clean? No all that disgusting open  air has contaminated them. I dropped an agar plate in the open air and like six different contam spots grew. That was for literally 2 seconds.

I feel that. There’s SO much to learn. It took me a while before the info started to coalesce into something workable on my end, since I started with zero knowledge. But being able to save myself thousands of dollars annually on medicine was a big driver.

Read read read read. For every hour you spend practicing mycology at home, read 3 hours. And don’t be afraid to go into threads and ask for help. People here are very helpful and don’t mind directing you to resource rich threads. It’s important to be able to separate contemporary info from outdated info too, so always ask for clarification if you’re not sure.

Boiling the grain is to get the right moisture consistency. Boiling gets moisture into the inside of the grain. Then you dry it to remove a lot of that moisture. The outside should be fairly dry but a lot of moisture is retained inside. Pressure cooking it in jars sterilizes it.

Hi Bod! Very new at this and I’ve just been burying myself in this website going down so many rabbit holes just posted by you! I have learned so much from you! What an amazing community this is!
Sorry if this is a dumb question… when you put the grain in the jars to sterilize are you only using foil to cover the jars?

Hello!
How long can the jars sit in the PC after they have been ran thru it? I know that they have to cool before you can inoculate, but is it possible for them to sit for too long before inoculation?

I wouldn't leave em too long because the condensation gets crazy and you can rust your lids/pc

I take mine out asap and put them in a water bath to cool. I inoculate maybe 15-30 minutes after taking them out of the PC with this method. Works great.
