I'm not sure if my Presto's safety lock has come up by itself in the last 15 years.  When steam is fully rolling out I grip the handles and squeeze the lid down quickly and deliberately, this causes the pressure to spike in the pot and the safety nub to pop up.

When my Mirros don't seal by themselves (usually), I have to use a similar trick.  Crank the heat up so the steam is building rapidly then grip the handles and squeeze together and hold until the steam builds up enough pressure to push and spread the seal so it makes a proper airtight seal.

I recently bought another used 22qt Mirro and it is an absolute bitch to get to seal.  Make sure the weight is down and holding pressure on the steam vent then before too much pressure is being built up, squiggle the lid (turning back and forth 1/4") to try and get the seal to 'seat', after that it is a combination of holding the lid down and twisting the lid before it gets too difficult because of pressure.  Just keep holding that pressure so no steam is leaking and occasionally alternate more and less pressure between left and right hands and eventually it should seal.  I am deeply sorry for those people that do not have both left and right hands to accomplish this process.  I'm also sorry if you're a bitch and not also a pressure canner.

When loading and packing, be careful the venting pop-up valve doesn't get jammed up against the jars and stuck closed. It can be impossible to tell from glance alone, but when the old presto was venting today it was dripping excessive water through the valve yet the steam was weak and choppy. I waited for several minutes no pop. Then some strange sounds. Knew something wasn't right so I turned it off and waited several more mins to cool (wear mits to release or you'll scorch your hands), and turns out valve must have been perfectly jammed against the jars with no wiggle room. Finagled the scorching bastards and started the process from scratch and hey presto, Bod's works a charm, as per always. Anyways hopefully this is helpful to someone learning on the job like myself. Cheers!

My 23qt presto's pressure lock pop up thing kept leaking steam and I couldn't get above 5psi, I tried giving it some little taps to help it seat and it just wouldn't... So I turned off the heat and let the pc cool down a bit until I could take the lid of and apparently the vent lock had been unscrewing itself, not sure how close it was to coming apart but I could see a few threads and I had to screw it back together.

So yeah, that's a thing. I guess make sure the pop-up lock isn't slowly unscrewing between cleaning and usage.

I’ve had that happen and since then I give the lock a twist before putting the lid on every time… it’s a good practice for sure

No, normal stove top, in Italy you only find these crappy PC's , I'm thinking of buying one from the states but they charge 160$ for shipping and import taxes for a 80$ pc.... On amazon

Old post but I found that the pressure cookers in Europe are indeed crappy.  What you want is an autoclave which is I think is the same thing but much bigger size.

Thanks for the post! I just upgraded from an instant pot to a 23 qt Presto a couple of weeks ago, and I did not realize how important the venting was.

You should try storing gaskets inside a plastic bag and in the fridge (4 - 10 ºC). As long as it doesn't get folded you will achieve an extended shelf life (depending on the material).

Thank you for this very helpful and informative TEK! I hope it is ok to ask questions... I live at an altitude over 4,000 feet. Should I increase the time and/or pressure?

Maybe there is another TEK for preparing the jars for the PC? I have a few questions about the jars. Please see image of lid.

1. I have always wrapped foil around slightly loosened jar lids before PCing them. Does that inhibit the steam from populating the head space inside the jar?
2. What type of air filter do you use for the jar tops
3. Should I replace the filter and inoculation port after every use?
4. Should I tape over the inoculation port after inoculation?
5. How long can the sterilized jars be stored and how to store them?

Any comments and observations will be welcomed.

I know you are going to want to increase the pressure but I've no idea of the specifics. I've seen it talked about in previous threads.

I also wanna say thanks for the writeup! Really helped when I first started.

Yeah, at 4k ft your atmospheric pressure is going to be about 2psi lower than at sea level, and you would need to increase your cooking pressure by that amount to produce the same temperature inside the cooker. If you can't increase pressure you'll need to cook longer for the same sterilizing effect (I couldn't tell you what the adjustment is, but it grows exponentially so it can be brutal, like double your times at 11psi or something)

Probably a super dumb question since the jars themselves go into the PC…can I just use half pint jars with the open side up to raise the trivet? IE they’ll be fairly submerged or is that not a good idea?

I wouldn't do that. The trivet prevents items from contacting the PC's bottom surface while it's receiving direct heat. I'd expect a glass jar to shatter if used the way you propose. Why do you want to raise the trivet?

Fair enough thanks for the quick response! I’m using half pants and it seems like the water will be very close to the foil or far up the side of the jar. I’ll just use bunched up foil A LA Bods initial post to raise the trivet.

You can use the metal rings if you've got plenty(take out and wash PC same day of use or they'll rust) and tinfoil balled up, I usually use both to have the trivet rest level when I do no-pours.
