LOL My style pasty plate. No need for tape. I can leave these lids snugged up as mycelium on agar plates doesn't need as much GE as grains. Once these plastic lids have been PC'd, they seem to do the trick for me. They warp in 1st PC cycle and will never fit tight enough, IMO, to cut GE for an agar plate. Enough air sneak through and I don't get contams unless I introduce during a transfer.

I think the jar just has enough air to begin with honestly

Try it and see. Without the foil the water runs in through the tape and ruins the water content of the agar. The towel is just my preference. If you don't want it, don't use it.

I have left old plates set for weeks in the jars. Once these plastic lids have been PC'd they are not water tight. I have tested it. You may be right, but I do believe that them not being water tight allows enough GE that they stay fine for a long time. Most of us don't leave them in there for week either LOL.

good to know, I didn't think about the water pooling

When I used to do the holes on the lid, the towel really made all the difference. I used to wrap the whole plate in foil and even then the tape would get really wet without the towel.

It looks like each one of us has a different experience, weird.

I have some PP5 plates as well as my jars. I have been tucking the foil up under the rim and I have yet to notice any moisture on my tape. Like I tuck that shit up under there snug, all the way around. I am just weird and do shit like that, OCD possibly? lol

So one of my pasty plates fell to the side and it solidified at a bad angle, to much on the side. I know I can re-PC it, but its only one so is there any easier, faster way to fix it. Will letting it float on some boiling water work? I still have the top wrapped up in foil.

I'd say nuke it in the microwave until it melts. It's already sterilised. This is how I heat up agar for pouring.

Should colonizing plates be left in the SAB or can they be stored in a cabinet/drawer or on a shelf out of areas with draft or constant nearby movement?

I used to keep mine in a mini mono but I moved them to a drawer because I ended up needing my mono for other things.
Leaving them out in the open would probably be fine but minimizing air flow around my plates gives me piece of mind

I somehow managed to fuck up all but 1 of 8 plates.
I have a 17qt Presto, filled it up with 2.5qt water, set the plates on the rack in the bottom, brought the pressure up slowly (took about 20 minutes to get to 15psi) then once it started rocking I slowly decreased the heat by about 1 notch at a time on the stove, enough to keep the regulator barely rocking but still at 15psi, then I let it cook for 40 minutes.

Cooled 8 hours in PC, once I opened the top and moved them into my SAB I knew immediately 2 of them had become completely filled with water even with double layer MP tape and a full wrap of foil. All the other plates that weren't waterlogged had at some point shifted and then cooled at an angle so the agar is basically vertical. I still knocked them all up with a print except for the drowned ones.

My only guess is the plates need to be raised up in the PC? I had assumed the canning rack would have been enough but all the paper towels were soaked upon removal as well as the tape underneath.

You have to keep the plates way above the water, use little jars to elevate the rack. Don't be afraid to add less water than it says in the instructions, there's no way lots of  water will evaporate in a short pc cycle.

Lots of people leave the agar in the pc overnight. I personally don't like that at all, among other things you're heat treating the agar for too long.

When pressure hits zero, I take the plates still hot and put them on the table where I do my sterile work. You can cover the plates with the SAB if you wish but it's not necessary.

I'll make sure to stack them on some tall 1/2 pints on the next batch. There's really only one plate I have hope for on this go around anyway. I did use paper towels, exactly like the pictures show. It must have been a combination of too much water and being too low when it started bubbling up.

I should mention that I saw water sputtering out of the air vent/cover lock and a couple drips at one point when building pressure that eventually stopped. Could that be a problem? I thought only steam should escape and if watwr droplets are visible then that would be ending up in the plates.

no thats normal.

it is steam. it forms water when the steam hits the air. it cools and condenses and builds around
the nozzle thing and gets spurted out.

Noted, thank you sir.

When you initially turn the heat on for the PC are you supposed to turn it all the way up to heat the water as fast as possible? I guess I'm confused by the phrase "bring the pressure up slowly." The pressure starts building when the regulator is applied, so how is the speed at which it builds up regulated?
I  work with pumps and pressurized filters everyday but heat isn't involved so my understanding of how it works inside a heated canister may be skewed.
