the *only* issue this election
    #2417935 - 03/11/04 04:39 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

there have been many posts on this board that complain about how the democraps and the repoops are more similar than different...i dont doubt that this is the case..but the reason often given..ie that they are both controlled by some kind of ultra-right conspiracy..is not necessarily true...

the two parties prolly began more or less as opposites..but over time..each will attempt to mimic the successful positions and strategies of the other..until they become so similar that the public begins to question the need for more than one...if this outside controlling entity really exists..then it is prolly just as much a result as it is a cause of this process...

at this point..one of them is forced to take an opposite position..if only on the issue of its continued existence...if it can successfully argue its case..then the two-party system continues..and at least in the short run..the two parties again begin to diverge...otherwise...

you wont hear it from either candidate...but that is really the only issue in this election..its not so much a referendum on bush..as it is on democracy itself...

I thought the democrats and republicans were the same party before they split.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

whether thats true or not is irrelevant.. if it is..then they started taking opposite positions on key issues from from the point they split...

If by opposites you mean opposites of what they are today. The Republicans started out as an anti-slavery party. I'm not sure exactly what the Democrats stood for back then, but the party as it existed then was founded by Andrew Jackson, who IMO was one of the worse presidents we've had. Interestingly enough, by the middle of the 20th century, there were basically 4 parties posing as two: the liberal Democrats in the West, the conservative Democrats in the South, the liberal Republicans in the Northeast, and the conservative Republicans in the Midwest. After Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, he remarked that the Democrats had just lost the South to the Republicans for a long time to come. This was not quite true, as the South's transition to the Republican party did not fully come about until the Nixon administration, but it was the start of the transition. In gaining the South, the conservative Republicans now outnumbered the liberal Republicans and were able to set the direction for the party, so it's likely that most of the liberal Republicans defected to the Democrats.
